how to make loco smoke look more real

Getting the physics right is essential for the simulation, having an 0-6-0 tank engine with the hauling power of a Class 66 just ruins the fun!

how to make loco smoke look more real

Post by davvydo »

does anyone think that msts could make a better effort at making the smoke and steam look more realistic.

there is

http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim

this lets you download a steam smoke replacement file, it make sthe steam look better but not yet realistic.

you know when a loco puffs away and you see a cloud rise into the air at the beat of the loco.

can this be done???

Hi Mate
That file is also available in this sites library...there is also a diesel patch...but I didn't like that too much.
I think its part of this file too

Not with any current sim, no, the smoke graphics are not linked that closely to the eng file. Later sims should be able to address this.

It is possible though in a limited way with Trainz, but there are lots of problems other than that. In fact Trainz steam is but a bad joke.

If future sims can exactly link the exhaust output to cylinder stroke (and therefore to wheel rotation) and the regulator and reverser setting and to whether the fireman is shovelling on or not, with suitable sound sets as well then the result would be awesome.

Aaahhhh... The old wish-list. Assuming we had all those Martin, I'll bet we could still find plenty to moan about eventually. ;)

I have a video of Duchess of Sutherland tackling the Long Drag back in the 80s, she's doing about 50mph with 12 on and the sound and sight is just amazing. One day, that sort of spectacle will be seen on train simulators... it's the waiting for it that's so hard.
