Sounds for the APT

The SMS sound system in MSTS 1 has been quite well understood for some time, but there are still new things being learned as well as a wealth of information about what's already known that you can learn here.

Sounds for the APT

Post by doclivcm »

Hi everyone,
Now we have a cabview to go with Daves model I thought I would have a look around and alias it to some British sounds (Acela does nothing for me!) and after having a look around the web couldn't really come up with much as to how it sounded so I am seeking opinions here.
First off with Daves model I thought the nearest I could probably get was to use the 225 sounds but apart from the power car in the middle of the APT would the driving ends also be powered or would they be more like a DVT?
On one of the CD routes I also have an APT-E. This I believe had Gas Turbine engines. Any suggestions for that one?

Thanks in advance.

DOC

I guess the cab sounds of the APT-P (ie the Class 370 electric prototype - NOT the gas turbine APT-E) would be very similar to those of a DVT - where can I download such a sound set ? (please send me the fileid)

Best wishes

Rob: I have aliased all my DVTs to the ECE pack. However I used to alias them to these:

Jon: Thanks for those. Very much appreciated. Will put them in and have a runaround later. Just to clarify one point though, I take it the driving ends are not motored?

Hi Doc
If you're talking about the APT-E then both ends were the power cars with 4 gas turbines per car.......... one of the reasons it did something like 12 gallons per mile at 155mph.

Jon,
Just had a runaround on the APTs. Excellent sounds for the E-version. As regards to the motored(?) driving ends I was wondering if the P-version had it?

Thanks.

Hi Doc
If you look on Robs site, no they were just DVTs

That's correct the APT-P Driving Trailer Seconds (DTS) were not powered, although they did contain a diesel-alternator set to provide three phase 415v power to the auxilaries if the train needed to be towed over non eletrified lines.

APT-E turbine sounds? Where is this sound track available from please?

And there were actually 5 turbines per power car on most of the runs from early '74 onwards. The fifth turbine was originally used as an APU, located in the rearmost right hand bay on each power car. But when it became apparent that the Leyland units wouldn't give enough power to reach 150+ mph the heat exchangers were removed and two Dale diesels installed in the APU bays when the fifth turbines were moved forward.

Very few runs had all 10 engines running though, and the Record Run on 10-8-75 was only successful because of some swift Heath Robinson type work by the electrical engineers and the courage of the late Ray Coleman who 'drove' one turbine manually while being given instructions over the intercom by the turbine engineers in TC2!
