Sound Regions

The SMS sound system in MSTS 1 has been quite well understood for some time, but there are still new things being learned as well as a wealth of information about what's already known that you can learn here.

Sound Regions

Post by markjudith »

I am trying to create a couple of sound regions on the new Great Eastern route by Making Tracks, for my own enjoyment obviously! I am using Point sounds and jointed rail sounds which I created and have used on my own routes. There are no sound regions on the GE route, the default welded rail sound is fine. However if I add an entry and associated files to the ttype dat file & sound folder etc and place the regions on the route, my new sounds play where the default sound should be and nothing plays where my new sound should be :( Has any one any ideas?

Hi Markjudith

For the points sound to be identified as a sound region in the Route Editor a

TrackType ( "Points" "markjudithtrack10in.sms" "markjudithtrack10ex.sms" )

is required in the ttype.dat file.

For example if you were to add your points sound to the default USA route:

SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0t1t______

10
TrackType ( "Default" "USATrack0In.sms" "USATrack0Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Concrete Supported" "USATrack1In.sms" "USATrack1Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Wood Supported" "USATrack2In.sms" "USATrack2Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "In Tunnel" "USATrack3In.sms" "USATrack3Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Steel Bridge" "USATrack4In.sms" "USATrack4Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Girder Bridge" "USATrack5In.sms" "USATrack5Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Under Bridge" "USATrack6In.sms" "USATrack6Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Concrete Bridge" "USATrack7In.sms" "USATrack7Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Crossing Platform" "USATrack8In.sms" "USATrack8Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Wooden Bridge" "USATrack9In.sms" "USATrack9Ex.sms" )

This would become:

SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0t1t______

11
TrackType ( "Default" "USATrack0In.sms" "USATrack0Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Concrete Supported" "USATrack1In.sms" "USATrack1Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Wood Supported" "USATrack2In.sms" "USATrack2Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "In Tunnel" "USATrack3In.sms" "USATrack3Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Steel Bridge" "USATrack4In.sms" "USATrack4Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Girder Bridge" "USATrack5In.sms" "USATrack5Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Under Bridge" "USATrack6In.sms" "USATrack6Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Concrete Bridge" "USATrack7In.sms" "USATrack7Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Crossing Platform" "USATrack8In.sms" "USATrack8Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Wooden Bridge" "USATrack9In.sms" "USATrack9Ex.sms" )
TrackType ( "Points" "markjudithtrack10in.sms" "markjudithtrack10ex.sms" )

Not forgetting to increment the stack counter at the top of the statements in this case to 11

Jointed or welded rail sounds are usually created by the stock in which the sounds are generated from the .eng or .wag sound statements.
Whereas the point sound is placed in the route by placing the limits for the sound using the Route Editor.

If your new sounds play by default, then I assume you have simply substituted the wav files in the "default" TrackType, when in fact you require a "points" TrackType as indicated above.
My apologies for not making any reference to the Great Eastern route, I simply do not have the route.

Kindest regards

Thankyou for your reply Ray,
I had put the entries in the ttype.dat file as you illustrated, I have the default sound listed, untouched by me and 'Jointed rail In & Ex sms and Point In & Ex sms' below that with the stack count revised from 1 to 3.
When you go onto the GE route in editor there are not any yellow sound markers placed at all and the track plays the default sound. So I have placed the yellow markers at the beginning of a section of track pointing to default then the next set for jointed rail and then back to default in the correct way.
I have created my own ttype dat file and list my own sms files which in turn link to my own recordings, and have used them on my own routes many times, they work well, but when I try to use the same on GE they won't work, it's as if GE won't play more than one set of sounds I have also edited the Global sound config file to read more sound files.
If I make the default sound line in the ttype dat file read my sms files it plays them ok so I know they work, but if I put a second line in and add the region in RE they won't!

Strange but true!!! :D

Not to worry the sounds are quite nice anyway, but it would be good to clatter across the points approaching the stations!

Hi Mark

Are you sure `Jointed Rail` is a valid acronym in the sound region instruction set, the reason I ask, is because I have never come across it.
I assume the line statement is:

TrackType ( "Jointed Rail" "markjudithtrack11in.sms" "markjudithtrack11ex.sms" )

For each TrackType there is a unique and complimentary numerical identifier for the sms files.

Eg. "Under Bridge" has (6) 6In.sms 6Ex.sms
"In Tunnel" has (3) 3In.sms 3Ex.sms

Hence "Jointed Rail" would have to be (11) 11In.sms and 11Ex.sms or what ever the unique numerical identifier would be for Jointed Rail.

We`ll have you clattering over the points yet. :)

Kindest regards

Hi Ray!
Thankyou so much!
The numerical identifier 'track type' That's where I had gone wrong. I had previously used the Jointed track as my 'Default' track sound on my own routes which were steam era early sixties, and copied that to the GE route and used it as the 'Jointedtrack' and omitted the all important track type within the sms file, I have put the correct numbers in and all is well now! Thanks for leading me in the right direction! I obviously can't see the wood for the trees!

Thanks Ray, I'll go play with my noisy trains now!!
