Help! Continuous sound level from normal and AI Trains

The SMS sound system in MSTS 1 has been quite well understood for some time, but there are still new things being learned as well as a wealth of information about what's already known that you can learn here.

Help! Continuous sound level from normal and AI Trains

Post by Retro »

Hi,
I have recently started getting a problem with my sounds.
Sometimes they sound and work fine then after switching views the sounds are all the same. eg. In the train passes view the sound is on all the time at full not building or fading as it used to. On the outside loco and end of train view the same happens. The end of train sound used to be the quiet noise of the passenger cars. Now its the same as the front loco sound. Also the AI trains are affected. I used to hear them gradually coming and as the passed fade away. Now I hear them at full levels about 3 minutes before I can see them and from 3 minutes after they have past. Once the Sim gets in this mode nothing can stop it apart from a complete re-start of the program. My sound device is a Realtek High Definition on motherboard system and works well with the sound on other programs. My sounds on MSTS are set to high quality.
Thanks and Regards
James

A Soundblaster Live! or similar card will solve the problem, improve the sounds and help stop crashing.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I used to have a Soundblaster card on my old machine which worked fine with MSTS but this new machine has got XP Media Centre Edition 2005 and this with some other programs I use has several issues with Creative Sound Cards.
AFAIK I have the latest drivers for my Realtek Sound according to the Hewlett Packard Machine Updates System. Windows Update has no options showing any driver downloads for this new machine either.
This problem is happening with all engine sounds and I have a variety of sounds not just the default ones. If I could get the sounds to stop working all the time. I might be able to identify the problem but somtimes I can change views without a problem.
Any other ideas much appreciated.
Thanks and Regards
James

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. This does seem to effect New Computers. Mine is only 3 months old and I have had several problems with MSTS on this new machine which did not bother my old machine all of which have been fixable so far except this one. If you come up with an answer let me know and I will do the same. This particular problem has stopped me using the program ATM. I have been spending some time on FS2004 which I have just bought cheaply due to the new version release FSX.
FS2004 runs great on this new machine and judging by the comments in the FlightSim newsgroups FSX has not been received very well and needs some incredible Hardware to run it with all the bells and whistles.
I guess I will now wait for the new Cuju program to be released.

Try turning your sound hardware accelaration level down.

Start Menu -> Run. Type in dxdiag.

Go to the first Sound tab, which should relate to your sound hardware and set the slider to a lower level.
