Sound.. Heavy on resources?

The SMS sound system in MSTS 1 has been quite well understood for some time, but there are still new things being learned as well as a wealth of information about what's already known that you can learn here.

Sound.. Heavy on resources?

Post by Sly401 »

Hi Folks

New to MSTS but a lotta years flying a computer screen :-?

I have a top spec rig that will run every flight sim I have come across with everything maxed out.. so I was surprised to find that although I get good fps 30-70 from MSTS, I get stutters and it seems to be when sounds load from my hard drive ie the sim is waiting for sounds

1). Is this normal?

2). Once the sound loads into RAM is it called from there subsequently?

I ask this because I know of similar problems in flight sims.. and we worked around it by running a file that used all the sounds once during load up of the mission (activity) and then they stayed resident in RAM so were called much quicker.

Any experts on the way sound is handled within MSTS out there?

MSTS is clean install Fully patched
Have tried turning down hardware acceleration..
Have tweeked to 200 sounds limit
The number of sounds slider makes no difference
Have tried using on board sound, SB Live , and SB audigy cards
Still seems to wait for sounds

Thought this rig should eat a 4 year old sim... but I guess we live and learn :-?

Thnx Sly 8)

Hi
Quick answer...you can load all wav files for a route....Route Riter has a button. Some say it improves things...others disagree..(theres a reverse button anyway)
Stuttering of MSTS...is caused by heavily populated tiles....and cannot be eliminated...but it can be reduced by ...having very fast HDs (RAID if poss)...having a seperate sound card, turning off the Win swap file , and making sure (route )HDs are defagged regularly.
Cheers

do you have to use it every time before you run or just once?
I will have another run through with it to see if I can suss it

Thnx again
