That awful rumbling noise

The SMS sound system in MSTS 1 has been quite well understood for some time, but there are still new things being learned as well as a wealth of information about what's already known that you can learn here.

That awful rumbling noise

Post by Breedlings »

Evening all,

Is there a way of preventing the awful rumbling noise that MSTS seems to insist on playing as a background to AI trains?

That noise is absolutely dreadful. I purchased Railwaves Enhanced Track Audio back in early 2002 and have never looked back. Superb product!

Thanks for the responses but the sound in question doesn't seem to be a part of the ttype sounds, or at least using modified and cut down versions does not erradicate the noise.

I think it could well be some part of an MSTS default that's played in the cab when an AI train passes.

I know what you mean about that dreadful rumble . But have you heard those track sounds that come with Japanese Routes 1 & 2 ?. I think if i played msts with my eyes shut - i could pretend i was in a wood workshop on a sunday morning as the track sounds go "tap" "tap" "tap" "tap" "tap". Those of you that own that pack will know exactly what i mean about those sounds :D. They are bloody awful  :).

Railwaves is definitely the way to go.

The other set of replacement sounds (as shipped with SVR) is rolling stock dependant. Unfortunately I found these cause alot of distortion within MSTS on my system (even after adjusting the sound parameters) to the point when I was running 37418 from the ELR last night on the Far North there was just this white noise with the occasional piece of throttle sound. I went into the main MSTS Sound folder and restored the original genpasswagonsteam.sms (I think). 37418 now sounds crisp and clear along with the Railwaves audio.

This is probably due to limitations of my sound card so no criticism of the sound set, I'm sure others have got it working perfectly, but it doesn't seem to get on with my setup at all.
