Short Beginner Activities

The MSTS Activity Editor allows you to make your own activities, or missions, for the player to complete. This is also how you can get lots of other trains running while you drive yours!

Short Beginner Activities

Post by NeutronIC »

This is something that everyone, even the newcomers to activity creation, can help me with!

Can you kind folk put your heads together and come up with a bunch of short beginner activities for me? These would be for exhibitions (though of course upload them to the site so everyone can enjoy them!).

The routes to use are:
Mid East UK, Ruabon-Llangollen-Bala, NRR 5 and Talyllyn.

Stock - entirely up to you.

Goals:
Short, 15-20 minutes for someone who is new to train sim.
Easy, minimal use of reversing points. Where you do use reversing points put messages up saying "ok, stop and turn around..." much like I did on UKTS 3 (move coaches) with Mid East.
Easy, nothing too hard. Example: Freight from A to B, Passenger from A to B, Passenger with a couple of stops, small amount of shunting etc.

Try and show off good stock, have plenty of other things happening while the user is doing their work, and use particularly good areas of the route.

I have 7 such activities on the Mid East CD so feel free to take inspiration from them.

Remember, the goal of these short activities is to WOW the people using and watching them - so don't stick to realism, that's unimportant for these in my opinion (though it would be nice to be at least plausible :) ), these are about having something engaging and fun to watch as well as drive. Drivers of these activities could be young or old, experienced or not. Bank on no experience :)

I'm not too fussed how much stock you need for it either - seeing the same train over and over won't be as good as two or three different ones so let's see variety.

Be creative and let's see what we can come up with!

Matt.

Matt

I wrote a number of 20 minute activities for Caldervale (Manchester to Rochdale), but they only got used twice at Croydon. :(

I'll have a go at producing some more, but not for the routes you listed (to avoid treading on toes). I might do one for the new underground route (20 mins end to end) and perhaps a few continental and US routes (for variety). I had intended writing a short Talyllyn activity but someone with the same name as me suggested a return trip and I was stupid enough to listen - he never played it either :x

I agree with the comment about plenty of AI traffic and variety and will do my best :D

I'll do the Tallylyn Marathon one at Bedford Martin!

P.S. sorry bout Croydon but on the Saturday Highworth was playing up and wouldn't run but on Sunday after I put your Tallylyn activity on I got Highworth going and spent a good while talking to GavinW and PeterDore about it....

Do you have much call for foreign routes at exhibitions Matt? American, German etc? Because I was thinking, the Albula line route is gorgeous and pretty short. Would make a fine introduction if people were interested in more than UK trains.

Please do use foreign routes as well, some exhibitions have different themes so we try to fit in - eg. the Newmarket exhibition is for the euro model railway society so everything we demo is european :)

I could do some too if you like. How about PT1, 2, Arlbergbahn? Maybe even Wupper and Berln-Sczeczin.

Simon

I've got all those routes apart from Wupper (although the Berlin route isn't 100% reliable - not the latest version either) so they could be run on my PC. If writing German stuff, please don't use a huge variety of non-Protrain stock and give me plenty of notice - I don't want to spend an hour at the show installing trains. Same goes for Arlberg. I've probably downloaded everything but only a fraction is installed.

Fodda
Feel free to write Albula activities - the route and trains are already installed on my pc. If you have Heidi you might like to use those trains as they are better than the freeware RhB stuff.

Sure. There'll be a fair bit of PT-stock-mixing (the 143 is invaluable), but the one I have in mind for PT1 should only require two or three coach sets to download.

GNER is my favourite route, even with the lack of scenery and stations. Not sure if Matt requires activities for this route though, because of the current lack of scenery and stations.

.......Still haven't ordered my copy of MidEast yet. Must order it tomorrow.

The "Historical Journey" activity using Stephenson's Rocket (uploaded today), may give a different perspective for your Exhibition.

There's been a rocket available since before UKTrainsim started, but the trouble is, you soon lose interest at 8 mph. Still, it would make a change I agree.
