Out and back to Steyning

The MSTS Activity Editor allows you to make your own activities, or missions, for the player to complete. This is also how you can get lots of other trains running while you drive yours!

Out and back to Steyning

Post by perfnet »

Hi, all. My latest activity for the Steyning route is now available for download. However, I have been told by Trevor Ellis that I missed one piece of required stock from the readme file. It is

I have now used the related files function to provide the definitive list of all the required files for the activity including the missing one.

If anyone has any feedback for me concerning the activity, good or bad, this would be an ideal thread to use.

Kind regards

Hi Richard, Got all the stock and unpacked the first unpacker only.
The game starts to load but crashes send/don't send 1/4 of the way across the first start up screen. The two other DMU activities are ok :-?

Any ideas :(

I have just completed the SVR stock version with no problems, although I did have to run the .apk file twice before I got started ( no idea why ).

Another smashing activity Richard.

Hi Ron

I have not come across that problem myself. Can I suggest turning down the display settings and seeing if that works? I tend to pack activities with static consists so I wonder if that is causing a problem for you?

Cheers

Hi Richard,Still getting the same problem, Did you make this activity using the original download files or the latest downloads because its now telling me that my track data base is Version 1397 and that the new activity is built on track data base version 1449 and thats why this one won't load :(

Sorry but it's a no go for me

I completed it (the non-SVR version) without any problems. Thanks for another great activity.

Just to point out that there is no difference whatsoever between the original download files or the latest downloads.
The only possible difference is that Richard, most probably has the patch installed.

Has anybody got this to work with the SVR stock version? I've tried a few times and cannot couple to the cement wagons at hove no matter how hard I try! Is it just me?

Coupling up seems very speed dependant in this activity. When testing it a speed of 3 or 4 mph (only) seemed to work for me. Other speeds either failed or just crashed the program!

Hi Paul

I had absolutely no problems with either version - This is a very good Activity - the only problem I got was sticking to the 25mph limit with the unfitted wagons made me 5 minutes late at Steyning and I arrived back at Brighton 3 minutes late!!

I had no problems Front Coupling to the wagons or Un-Coupling but I always use the following techniques:-

Front Coupling

Approach your wagons at 2mph accelerating with a projected speed of 5mph and as soon as you have coupled at 2mph apply the brakes.

Un-Coupling

After stopping select reverse then release and re- apply your brakes at 13% then un-couple using F9 then accelerate at around 15% throttle(dependent on the eng. physics) - as soon as the loco draws away release the brakes.

Hope the above helps you out to complete this Activity as it is very good indeed.

Kindest Regards

Mike

PS Richard - Have you any more in the "pipeline" for Steyning???

Well, I did sucessfully manage to couple last night without crashing, but I still had a couple of problems. Firstly, the saved activity (I had to resume from a save at the point when notified as MSTS crashed on coupling on the previous attempt) doesn't want to load the AI versions of the .eng files for some reason :-?.

Secondly, I got stuck at the signal just after Bamber on the way out to Steyning. I suspect I probably arrived a little early, but only by a few minutes, but the signal stuck on red until well after I was due to leave Steyning on the return to Brighton.

Well, nobody else seems to be having the problems, so I'll give it another whirl tonight and see how I get on.

It is an excellent activity by the way, with very nice use of low poly static consists.

Gents, thanks very much for the positive comments. I will see what I can do about future Steyning activities... I have an idea for one but it is in the queue presently, I'm afraid. I will work on it.

Paul, there are no services in front of you once you get on the branch, or did one get past you while you were at the cement works? If you take a while at the exchange siding, that can happen under certain circumstances. Mind you, MSTS and the way it handles paths (even from one machine to another) seems to wander into art v science territory sometimes...

Ran the activity last night without problems.

I swopped the player wagons for more suitable 5planks and use a much modified default.wag so I had no front coupling problems.

I was pleased to see the full sidings - a good advert for my low poly stuff and proof that they realy do help with frame rates.

Must get on with the modern air braked versions.

Agreed, it gives the activity a nice busy look of a working railway, without killing frame rates. Thanks for the static stock Ian, and thanks for using them Richard!

I did get further with the activity last night, I think I was passed by an AI service whilst in the exchange sidings previously.

If anybody is interested, I've started playing around with a version of this activity that uses BATS Southern and Making Trains LSE stock. If anybody is interested, I'll keep working on that if Richard is interested?

I really like the Steyning route, and here's hoping we get more nice activities for it in the not too distant future (hint, hint).

Ian/Paul

I think the static/low poly rolling stock is/are amongst the most important items ever released. They gave us the ability to make a route look buzzing with activity with very little effort. Suddenly, the large yards on a couple of the steam routes became something to play with rather than things to avoid!

Paul, I have no problems as long as I get mentioned in there somewhere if you are going to re-upload it. Much appreciate being asked first. I have worked out by now that activities are more popular if the stock is not initially tied to a particular product. Though Steyning seems to have been extremely popular as routes go!
