NGR.. Coal from the north by Dave Dibben,
I thought this to be an excellent activity, especially as it was a 'first attempt'. and I look forward to more of the same (hopefully!)
Question, however, for Dave is that I am curious to learn the reasons for the reverse path that was taken through Arpley Junction. Was there a signaling problem with the more 'obvious' route?
Not a criticism, but I am keen for any feedback re-any problems so that then can be corrected for NWE V2... (3 TC generated terrain errors spotted and duly noted by myself whilst running this particular activity.)
Cheers,
Terry

Terry's gantries are prototypical - there are no gantries in real life between Newton and Manchester, or Earlestown and, er. wherever they pick up again near Liverpool. The gantries at Newton/Earlestown are a little diversionary route that some freight takes to allow it to be overtaken by expresses on the WCML.FuNky2k wrote:Great route Terry, are you putting up cantenary posts all the way from Liverpool lime street to manchester on your update?? it would be nice, wouldnt have to need them thunderbirds anymore.![]()

As for the reverse path to Arpley Junction, I tried selecting a straight reverse but the Activity Editor wouldn't let me. However if I changed line first it did let me select the route to Arpley Junction. I have no idea why this should be. I do quite like watching a long train thread its way through point work and the used path does provide for that.
I certainly hope to create more freight activities on all this industrial real estate you've kindly provided us all (once I sort out my Christmas shopping

Paul's comments are correct... I've tried to stick as close as possible to the "real thing"... (On that basis, look out for the Semaphores on the Poulton - Blackpool N stretch in V2jp4712 wrote:Terry's gantries are prototypical - there are no gantries in real life between Newton and Manchester, or Earlestown and, er. wherever they pick up again near Liverpool. So regret no additional gantries between Liverpool & Manchester.

Can I suggest some steam activities for NWE. Like Terry, I am not much good with creating traffic patterns in the AE only simple service runs.
One particular train in the 1950s was the 6pm from Manchester Victoria to Southport Chapel St always hauled by a Jubilee, either Glorious, Irresistable, Tobago and Mars, hauling twelve coaches of ex LMS blood & custard stock. It arrived at Meols Cop Staition at approx 6-55 pm and was due to arrive at Chapel St at 7 pm. After leaving Manchester it made just one stop at Wigan, then Meols Cop, St Lukes and Southport Chapel St. (St Lukes has sadly been demolished along with the low lwvel line to Wigan.)
This train ran an all year daily service Mon - Fri and was known as the Buisness Express as it carried mostly buisnessmen returning from their work in Manchester.
Local traffic was usually 2-6-0 Tanks with Maroon Suburban Stock, Black Fives or Hughs Crabs. Goods stock was quite plentiful on this route too.
Someone with the knowhow could maybe create an activity based on this particular run ( Jubilee Mars is available in UKTrainsim as are all the other type of locos and rolling stock.
Just a thought!
