All these sidings at Liverpool Docks on the Mersey route make me want to do a steam shunting activity there. Can anyone tell me, or point me in the right direction to find information on the stock which would have been used?

Pugs, pugs and more pugs! I reckon the pug at file ID 6263 is a must. You'd also see Jinties in quantity. For a bit of variety and rarity, try an ex-L & Y 2-4-2 tank or Terry Thornton's ex-LNW tank 58911 at ID 6624. In the exchange sidings to take stuff away you'd find ex-LNW G2 0-8-0s, or Stanier 8Fs, Crabs or Black fives. You'd also see a lot of Fowler 7F 0-8-0s around Liverpool but I'm not aware of a model of one for MSTS. For stock, look at anything short wheelbase, especially vans and general open wagons. The curves were too tight for bogie stock.
For AI, specials left Liverpool Riverside and headed up to Edge Hill often double-headed by a couple of Jinties (I think the bridge over the dock was weak, until the last few years when it must've been strengthened just in time to close it!). I'm sure I recall reading somewhere that the last train to leave Riverside was in 1970, a troop special of squaddies returning from duty in Belfast, hauled by a Class 40.
Hope that helps
