My New Activities

The MSTS Activity Editor allows you to make your own activities, or missions, for the player to complete. This is also how you can get lots of other trains running while you drive yours!

Have now completed the 00:05 Victoria - Brighton activity.

My report is as follows:-

left Vic 2secs late
CJ 1m 47secs late due to 20mph at Battersea Park
EC 2m 21 late due to late running train in front
GA 2secs late made up time
3B 3 secs late
HH 1m 46 late due to red sig at Ouse Valley Viaduct, then got stopped on next sig which was red, which then went to green. Sig man playing around?
Got in to Brighton 53sec early.

Another good activity from the Master.

AwShucks Andy - You are too kind

Its funny about the signal check outside Haywards Heath since at that point there are no AI trains ahead of you. I fiddled around at some length to try and fix it, but it actually has the desired effect of slowing your path to Brighton so in the end i left it in. Nothing shows up on the activity editor at that time. It wasn't on the first few run through's i did. It started about the 4th or 5th test, but i dont think i changed anything significant in between, just tweaked timings a touch. If anyone has any ideas im open to suggestions.

That ones probably my last now until the add pack comes out, unless anyone else has a request.

I noticed the same (red sig at ouse valley), thought it was due to a slow mpv in front or something, your briefing does warn of handing the line to railtrack at a certain time.

I suspect its to do with the MPV unit that you are "racing", I have found myself when trying to do clever things like passing services, sometimes the signalling gets confused. That red is because MSTS thinks it should be letting the MPV into the loop, the points aren't set for the player so the player sees a red. After a while, MSTS realises that its got it wrong, the player is ahead of the MPV, and sets the points accordingly, resetting the signalling.

I'd leave it as it is Laurie, perhaps put a warning that there are signalling problems at copyhold junction, just wait and it will clear.

Thanks Alan I did suspect that it might be connected with the following MPV but didnt quite understand how that could be. Im sure you're right.
I'll leave it as it is.
when trying to do clever things

Excellent! While you're stuck in that room, build us some more fantastic activities. ;)

Yes, I have to say the activities are superb!

They actually highlight two things that vex me with LBE (if I may indulge you for a moment!!)

1) NO matter what activity I do, Clapham is deserted! There may be a SWT train but there is no announcements of any kind and no people on the platform!!!

2) There are no slammers in the pack which means these superb activities which only use default stock lack the true Southern spirit (that is in no way a criticism by the way!) I am just pointing out it is a little bit of an oversight as the slammers are going to be around for a fair while yet!!

Quick question!! I know on BVE you can actually have track workers next to the track, or working on adjacent lines etc.... Is that possible on MSTS?

One thing to think about on an activity would be a Sunday run, with the trains all using the slows from Purley to Three Bridges via Redhill middle roads (if not stopping there) with stationary P/way trains and workers.

Apolgies if I have gone off topic, delete this message if necessary!

1) An early beta had people on the platforms, there were several cries of "thats ." from these forums so they were removed.

2) there are third-party activities that use non-default stock.

3) Yes, there are at least two activies in the pack called "engineering works" where there are MPVs and crews stood about on closed lines.
The forthcoming Addpack has several more of these.

Ive also done a couple or three sunday engineering activities to tie in with the ones Alan did with the CD. The Brighton to Horley (the beginning) features two MPV's on both up and down slow lines - with work crews - at both Horley and at Three Bridges, and the return run from Redhill has the MPV placed as closely as I could get it to the location in Alans activity.

I believe ive also done a couple of activities with other trains at Clapham at the same time as the player service. It is actually quite hard I find to get all the timings dead right, so much depends on how people drive.

I have deliberately kept all my activities to the default stock. Several times ive been tempted to include the Gatwick Express or other stock, but as I hate downloading stock to make an activity work ( i never download anything that needs extra stock ), Ive tried to remember that in mine.

I'll have a look at the Sunday timetables to see if I can find anything that looks interesting for an activity and maybe do another for you. Unless you have a specific run you'd like me to try?

I'll have a go at the 09:32 Victoria to Brighton via Redhill on a Sunday, using a 377 Electrostar and using the slow lines only. I'll try and use real times for the AI traffic and chuck in a liberal number of MPV's either stationary or moving slowly. It looks quite a good run having a mixture of fast and stopping service. You never know - you might even see a steam excursion heading to Victoria :D

Should be ready in a couple of weeks - or maybe sooner if I get the writing bug :o

UPDATE:

Ive done the player service and paths and tested them. There is a fair amount of slack in the timings so some tweaking may be necessary after ive finished the AI traffic.

Ive completed the framework of AI traffic from the timetable, but as usual the AI trains cant keep to the real timetable. My next task therefore is to adjust start / finish times of AI traffic so you see the right train in the right place at the right time, by adjusting start or finish times. This will probably take a couple of evenings.

After that I'll add the moving AI MPV's, a few surprises and finally all the static consists.

All sounds excellent!!

Like I said the activities are superb and anything looking like a moan is nit-picking!!!

With the Clapham thing i was not referring to trains, but there is no announcements or anything (even streatham common has a cases and parcels one) and anyone who goes near clapham (SC side) will know that there is enough announcements during the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shame there are not any 37s or 66s as default stock! They would look great on a ballast!!

Great work though, I have not done all the activities hence I have not seen all the crews and MPVs!

Well ive managed to get 5 trains into clapham at the same time :D but unfortunately I have no control over the station announcements - they are the work of Europeanbahn and I haven't figured out a way to turn them on or off at particular stations.

In retrospect the 09:53 Thameslink from East Croydon to Brighton would have been better run since it follows the 09:32 between 3 and 4 minutes behind all the way - lots of opportunities for cautions and signal checks, but i was bored with doing 319's

When the Add Pack comes out shortly there will be much more scope for freight activities. Alan Salmon has written some jolly good ones to get us started and they have already given me a few ideas for some more - the provider of my inspiration is Alan.

Oh well - break over - back to the AI Timetables :o
