You're right Alan, I can see that now that you've pointed it out.As for 30496, it looks like the lower parts of the smoke deflectors have been removed. Compare them with the photo of 30514, and you can clearly see the riveted overlap between the two parts.

But I was only 'right' after you pointed out the difference - I'd never noticed it, and I took the photos.dee4141 wrote:You're right Alan, I can see that now that you've pointed it out.As for 30496, it looks like the lower parts of the smoke deflectors have been removed. My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558
Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

Hi Dee4141
Referance your querry on S15's lined or unlined black there is a picture in Peter Cooper's book on Maunsell S15 showing 833 at Brighton in 1936 lined and with a 6 wheel tender
and it is great to see more Southern Loco being built
Regards Pete

Thanks Peter. I just checked on Wikepaedia and apparently from 1927 they were painted in Black with green lining and stayed like that until nationalisation. Sounds like a nice livery too, although there was no picture.
