LNER V4 Bantam .
This is a nice loco David, but does anyone know when these locos were withdrawn? I have a copy of the Ian Allan Combined Volume 1953, British Railways Locomotives and the V4s are not listed. Maybe they were withdrawn before Nationalisation. Also does anyone know how many were built?

Re: LNER V4 Bantam .
Hi Geoff
I've a facsimile edition of the Ian Allan combined BR Locomotives 1948 issue, and that shows under 'Class V4 2-6-2' just two locomotives: 61700 Bantam . and 61701 (no name quoted). It also says the class was introduced in 1941 but gives no idea on whether there were any more of them - if there were they must have had a shorter than usual working life of just seven years !
Hope this helps....

According to
http://www.lner.info/locos/V/v4.shtml
They lasted until 1957 when they were withdrawn from Aberdeen.

Re: LNER V4 Bantam .
Spooky this, I was just reading through a Railway book today (Big Four Rememered) and Plate 147 shows V4 61701 in Aberdeen yard and states that it was the last of the two to be withdrawn, which was 5 months after the Photo (dated 26th June 1957) was taken.
Unfortunately it doesn't say when Bantam . was withdrawn.
EDIT:
Just found this which will tell you all you what you know about the V4's.

EDIT 2: You just beat me to it David.

61700 was withdrawn March 1957 from Aberdeen Ferryhill. It was cut up at Kilmarnock Works in March 1957 (Information from http://www.britishsteam.com/)

Re: LNER V4 Bantam .
Interesting to read about the two V4's, from the info supplied since my queery. I have been having a search up my loft and found a 1944 Ian Allan ABC Combined Volume of British Railway Locomotives, which I knew I had, because I remember buying it when it was first reprinted in 1992, being I was born in 1944, I decided I must buy this copy. I have several of these volumes dating from 1944, then 1953/4, 55/6, 57/8, 62/3 64/5 and 1966/7, when Steam was being taken over by Diesels, the latter being quite a thick volume. I also have my first ever Ian Allan ABS LMS volume 1953, which I used when I started train spotting, this copy is full of underlinings and looking through it, I copt, 37 Patriots out of 52, 143 Jubilee's, out of 190, 63 Scots out of 71, All 13 Prinny Royals and 30 Semis out of 38 HAPPY DAYS
In the 1944 edition, only 1 V4 is listed No 3401 Bantam ., so the other loco must have been built in 1945. Looking through my copy of the ABC for 1953 again, the V4s are listed ( I must have missed them) and it shows both locos renumbered to LNER 61700 Bantam . & 61701 Unamed.
So we are lucky that we have a representation for MSTS, considering only two of the class were built.
Thank's everyone for your replies. You learn something every day.

Re: LNER V4 Bantam .
I'm telling this from memory, but the V4s were designed around the beginning of the war, and they used a lot of quite expensive (and in wartime, rare) alloy steels to save weight, so beyond the first two, continuation of the class as designed couldn't be justified in wartime. When Edward Thompson succeeded Gresley he basically redesigned the loco into a two-cylinder version, (with his known dislike of the conjugated valve-gear) and subsequent models would have had that configuration, though how they may have been classified I don't know.
As I say, don't take this as definitive; it's just that I'm sure I remember reading this in a book on LNER steam locos which I think was by O.S. Nock - who never forgave Thompson for rebuilding Great Northern into the progenitor of his long-legged pacifics. I'm sure there's a definitive version of the history of the smaller prairies somewhere...

Re: LNER V4 Bantam .
from what i have leant the V4s were not rebuilt but Thomson did build his B1 to replace them and of corse the line there were buit for (The west highland line ) had the the K4s which were more sure-footed on the steeper gradients and so there was no need for any more of them.
I am glad you all like the model i am going to be uploading a BR version next week and a few other locos to
