If you're not really sure about modelling, why not give Anim8or a go! It's freeware; the download is around 800 kb: and the results of your meanderings can be exported if you choose to continue along the path of insanity. I have 3DC for game importation (and detail work), but use Anim8or for basic model creation. Unlike TSM, the extrude function actually works!! Right now, I'm on the way (slowly) to making a model of a BR Standard Class 3 2-6-2 Tank.

The Transnorm/Transbright and AlphaNorm/AlphaBright work OK for me in TSM - you can get some great effects (subject to stuff disappearing - which can also be sorted by Route Builders making objects Terrain Objects)
