Lancashire and Yorkshire Barton Wright Class 25

Post by daandmda »

My first piece of rolling stock, what do you think so far?

Can't say for certain how long it will take. I have been working on it for roughly an hour in Google SketchUp, when finished I will export it to 3DSMax to add moving parts, then release it. I have yet to start the tender.

If you have 3DS Max why not use that for modelling, it'd make your life alot easier and the final model would no doubt be better too.

I have tried it, and found it extremely hard to use, so I'll stick with this and see how it goes. I made an extremely accurate model of the RMS Titanic in SketchUp:

It was for the game Virtual Sailor, and the model still needs a few nitpicks sorting out.

Anyway, back on topic, I'm correcting certain errors in the Class 25 model so far.

With the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway being my all-time favourite old railway company (the locomotives would have passed through where I live in Castleton!) you can expect some of their coaching stock and maybe even the express classes...

Is it possible to do that (model in SketchUp, export to 3DSMax, then export to MSTS)? Would it work with Gmax? If so, I might get a little more out of SketchUp, having built (so far only static) rolling stock models. I have tried modelling in various programs but found it very complicated, until I found SketchUp, which just feels natural.

There's a plugin so you can export from SketchUp to MSTS, you can find it from UKTrainSim

Thanks for the advice, but as far as I'm aware, it won't handle animation, such as might be needed for a steam loco, which was more my sort of idea...

Which is why im exporting it from SketchUp to 3DS to get it animated in 3DS Max, then to MSTS.

That was roughly the point I was making (although it probably got lost among the brackets - I must try and reduce my use of them). My question was: Would Gmax be a suitable middle step instead of 3DS Max?

Yeah GMAX would work fine. Just download the Train Simulator pack for it and away you go!
