Is it possible to use the same .s file in multiple .engs
This is a very basic question, and maybe should go in the beginners' slot. I wish to produce a number of variations on a basic theme, and was hoping to have a common .s file with the variations being in a freight animation overlay. I have tried the following
QUEENHILLS.ENG
has a .s file of CONTEMPBASIC.S
and frt anim QUEENOLAY.S
I also have a CONTEMPBASIC.sd file which points to CONTEMPBASIC.S
Obviously it doesn't work, or I wouldn't be asking the question!
Is the thing actually possible, or have I not tried hard enough?

Hi
Yes it should work.
A lot of newer freight stock does this, for number changes etc.
Check everything..its possibly just a typo.
Cheers
Jon
PS MSTS doesn't check the s file until loading...that is to say when I'm reskining I change s files in the eng file on the fly, without rebooting.

I'm not sure what Bazza means but I don't think it can be that.SavV1 wrote:@ Bazza: Huh? You seem to say that if I have two loco's in the same folder, and they share a texture one of them isnt going to work?

You can even alias to a texture located in a different folder from within the shape file.
95% of all my loaded wagons use RCH_Loads.ace.
The .wag file aliases to the shape file in the Common.Loads folder which in turn aliases to the RCH_Loads.ace in the commonace folder.
This way you don't have multiple copies of the same files in each wagon folder.

Pulling a loco out of the hat! ;-)
I tried a consist with two different loco shapes, which accidently (my fault) shared a common texture/s. It loaded fine in the consist editor, but when I ran the consist in the sim, one of the locos was 'missing'.
Eventually, I found and solved the situation by renaming (creating a separate set of textures) the offending texture/s files. I next amended the texture reference data in the shape file. Then I loaded the same consist back into the sim and both the locos were there.
Kevin, if the problem doesn't occur in other circumstances that it does not surprise me too much, because the sim is still full of weird quirks.
Cheers Bazza

2 different locos/.s files, both in the same folder sharing the same texture files.

Could be why you don't have the problem, Ian, perhaps it applies to shapes and textures sharing the same folder? You can even alias to a texture located in a different folder from within the shape file.

Attractive locos, those two, time for the grungy ol' C2 banger to reappear, and lower the tone, I think.
Picture is on the Ffestiniog route. Just below Campbells Platform on Dduallt tank curve.
Look forward to seeing your loco on the route
Cheers,
Kevin
