Hey guys,
Thanks for the kind words....

@ NiallGray, LODs or Levels of Distance are really detail settings at different distances.
For example at say 150m my model would display full detail, as we get further away from the model 300-600m the level of detail goes down.
If the LODs are well placed you shouldn’t really see any detail changes but they 'help' the computer along but letting it not have to load up the full amount of polys.

:-?
Hard to explain

@ rwaceyw in that pic only the under fame and gangway are photos. The body and insides are all hand drawn. Some by me others by (I expect you know who  )

Thanks again everyone

Kind regards
Matt

150m is too far away to start using LODs.

The screenshot shows brake hoses and jumpers at the ends and these poly eaters will not be seen more than 10m away.

This is a useful route to test LODs.

http://www.elvastower.com/file_library/ ... 8a6d0298ae

It's only a small download.

Just check the distance away on the route and LOD the parts out as they become less than a pixel on the screen.

Another trick is to use LODs to stop things appearing UNTIL a certain distance.

My wagon wheels are fully modeled (and high poly) close up but at 100m they dissapeared and are replaced by a five sided tube with the top poly deleted and alpha'd flats for the faces.
These low poly wheels are not animated saving processor work.

At 100m or even less, all you see is a dark blob anyway and the wheels are always high in polys so are well worth getting rid of as soon as possible.

You can do the same with any other tubular parts, replacing them with tubes with less sides or crosses.

You should definately use LODs as much as possible.

:D

150m was just an example.

But thanks for the info.

I still think that based on my systems performance its not really much different.

But i may do an LOD virsion as well, then there is something for everyone.

I also dont like watching detail pop up when the train is coming towards you.
Its more apparent with all these new camhack files.

Wow, these look very swish, loving the RFO! Any chance of that characteristic external aircon wine on the MKFs & Es in future releases?

I do know that the Mk.2 shown above, the fan on the undercarriage of the coach is animated along with the wheels.

Must say, your Mk2's are looking excellent!! Perhaps some "Anglia" versions could be done (especially when GE comes out!!) at some point, as they are probably the one major omission at the mo!
