Where can I get Gmax,
is this the same as Autodesk 3DS Max or 3D studio Max?
(or am i totally lost)

Gmax is kinda a cut down version of 3d studio max both made by the same company discreet, it is no longer available or supported.

Download the MSTS gamepak from Microsoft.

See Volker Bollig's tutorial for how to install, configure and start using it.

Although no longer supported, you're still able to register and use it.

If you scroll down the list of forums to the Gmax one, everything's there in a sticky.
