Myles,

It depends upon the Author, and you should ask him if it's not clear from the readme. In principle it's usually OK to do your own thing in private, but ultimately no-one can answer but the person wot made it............ ;-)

There is nothing wrong in changing the skins of a model on for use on your own machine. You would need permission to upload or distribute further. Some folk may wish to be asked before uploading screen shots to this kind of forum.

Well done for asking in the first place and I would enourage you to experiment that is how most folk have got into re-skinning or even model creation in the first place. So, have a go.

The problem with even posting screens of something you cannot pass on to others is 1) it tends to put pressure on the original author to grant permission for release, which is unfair and 2) people see it, like it and start asking you to e-mail it to them. Before you know it, they pass it on to their mates and the model gets around the community when the original author hasn't granted permission for that to happen.

So really if it's for your own private use on just your PC, never to be distributed you really should keep it totally to yourself, no screenshots uploaded here, etc.

we all have to start somewhere. We dont all jump in here knwing how the 3D model and texture.

But its a generally accepted rule that if you want something done, you have to do it yourself.

Myles,

Don't know what you are looking for, but the following two locos of Brian Walker and myself have been retired from main use as they have been superceded by new versions. They were left available purely in case someone had an activity including them.

Click to view more informationLMS exL&Y 2-4-2T (Crimson Lake) [259787 bytes] - 242LMS01.zip
File ID: 817 Date: 05 Feb 2002 - 1307 Downloads

Click to view more informationLMS ex L&Y Radial Tank (Black) [262496 bytes] - 242LMS02.zip
File ID: 1236 Date: 14 Mar 2002 - 1091 Downloads

They were built with TSM, not GMax, and the build files have long since pixellated into thin air anyway, but the 2-4-2T was a widespread loco type with many companies having examples, and they all looked fairly similar.

You are very welcome to do what you like with these two models from our stable, reskin, add freightanims using Gmax (heaped coal, more parts, etc), you can even publish screenshots and upload the results here if people like it.

Specifically, this is with these two models only though, but you could produce some acceptably close lookalikes, or purely ficticious. Only stipulation, please make sure that people know it's not "real world".

I have one running around in purple livery for Thomas the Tank "territory" with my Grandson's posterised photo "face" on the front.............well, HE thinks it's good........

Enjoy.................
