Pre-Grouping NER Carriages: Plans/Drawings wanted

Post by jonrach73 »

I have just finished building the NER S3 4-6-0 (recently uploaded) and would like to build a set of NER Carriages for it.

Does anyone have any plans / liveries for suitable coaching stock, or failing that know where I could get hold of some?

I am trying to get hold of 'The North Eastern Record' vols 2 and 3 which I hope will contain suitable information but if anyone knows of other sources that would be cool.

Cheers

Do you have a copy of Historic Carriage Drawings in 4mm scale by Campling and Jenkinson?

There are a few NER coaches in there.

Hey hey! Postman just delivered a copy of 'The North Eastern Record' vols 2 and 3 with details of NER locos and carriages so it's watch this space!

I've also got Historical Carriage Drawings on order too so between all these books I ought to be able to get some NER carriages on the go soon.

Cheers

Great news - it's so much better when the locos you've built have something to pull :)

Hopefully the carriages won't taken another 1.5 years to get built - but it will be a new learning curve of issues I suppose.

Having only built a wagon (IanM tutorial) a slightly flawed Class A4 and a tender loco, I've not had to battle with transparent coach interior issues and the like which I've seen discussed here... We shall see.

It would probably come in handy.. :)

I was thinking the best way might be to use your cab-builder plugin - with solid ends to make the body and naturally, the engineer plugin to do the underframe and bogies.

In fact, with any luck there won't be much actual modelling to do

I'm not sure how much detail to model and how much to texture - I would have thought windows would look too flat if they weren't in-set a bit.

However, at this stage I've not had time to study the drawings / photos so I will decide later on how to approach it.

presumably there's a way to avoid 1024 textures in coaches?

Cheers

Just take a look at how my coaches are organised :)

Bogies - one 256x256 for all 3 models
Bodies - single 512x512 for each - transparency only
Windows - separate small alpha ace, applied with wrap on a small object just inside the windows.
Numbers/lettering - use "decals"
Single 256x256 for interior objects.

Lots of re-use amongst the set of 3 models.

In 3DC, I tend to use the extrude tool (making sure the spots are blue!) for bodies - build half, then mirror it - I also split it in half along the length so I can use 512 textures.

Sounds like a tutorial could be in order...

A tutorial would always be useful!

Especially the texture wrap:

I tried using wrap to texture the underframe on the S3 without success. I wanted to use a small 64/64 texture of 'black paint' with noise added to texture the whole surface, using wrap (op adjust) to eliminate the texture stretching. What happened was that I could only eliminate the stretched look in one direction.

I must be missing something as it all looks so easy from Richard's tutorials on amabilis.com.

On another point, I guess now would be a good time to upgrade to 3DC 6.x?

You need V6.x to get the texture to apply properly when viewed from directly above - the wrapping should work properly then.
You can also use the adjust tool to wrap small textures.
6.5 also has a few other useful features.

Buying 6 now, means a free upgrade to 7 - hopefully in a month or 2?
