How come there was only one of this class built, and why on earth has it been withdrawn twice? For GNER to have obtained it, it must have been a successful loco?
That's my curiousity for you!!![]()
John
They built the Class91's instead.

If you want to make the class 89 and need detailed drawings and photographs you might want to have a look at http://www.traintesting.com/Class_89.htm

HiMiren wrote:I think they withdrew it because it wasn't a very reliable train. It would have been a nice site seeing a class 89 in front of MK4 coaches. BR also found that class 91's were more reliable. Have a look at the link there is a brief description of the class 89's life.
I think you're a bit wrong.....on all counts.
Withdrawn as none standard.
Re-instated because its an excellent loco.
Class91's initially a bit of a pig in a poke....but I believe they've settled down now.
Mostly political decisions ,or so I was told, by one of the main designers I had the pleasure to meet (in the cab) a few years ago.
Unfortunately I'm not very up on "modern" stuff.

While GNER had it, it was a regular on the Leeds - King's Cross route; not sure if BR used it in the same way or not. It was a good performer, having being brought out of preservation by GNER! As has been said before, as with any single loco class, any parts which fail are almost always non-standard and have to be made from new. When GNER considered repairing the 89, hiring Eurostar sets obviously made more sense to them.
