Disappearing wheels on whole train

Post by jefran »

I have been working in MSTS rolling stock for about 6 months and thought that I was getting to know what I was doing. I have produced some locomotives which are close to being presentable and some rolling stock to run with them (Narrow gauge). Every now and then however, all the wheels vanish from the train (apart from the loco and tender). Sometimes relaunching MSTS brings them back, sometimes re-booting the machine does, but the past few days, they seem to have gone completely. The whole vehicle is visible in Shape Viewer and I can add them to consists. The problem is not resolved by removing any one vehicle from the train and still applies using other people's locos, though my locomotives do not appear to infect other people's rolling stock.

I have searched through the postings and beyond the possiblility of a non-matched bracket in a file doesn't seem to have been raised before. This possibility seems unlikely as the problem seems to come and go. My brain is beginning to hurt - any bright ideas anyone?

Is it dependant on distance?

If so it may be to do with how the models have been made, as certain objects on a loco wagon can be removed or downgraded in detail at distance to save on frame rates>

Hi
Have you been using SFM on your stock....if so it can mess up the wheel size.....edit them manually afterwards.

Thanks everybody, yes it was a wheel radius problem! I would never have thought of such a thing. The wag files did not actually have a wheel radius entry, so I have put them in on the first couple of vehicles in the train, and now they are all there - as you can see:-

That looks very nice. The whole scene has a sort of African savannah feel.

Thanks Mervyn, that is exactly the impression I was trying to convey! The train is Indian, but I am practising for my line set in Kenya - there is a giraffe just off shot.

I'm bumping this because I had the same problem. Perhaps I missed an entry in exporting my coach to MSTS, but the wag file created by 3DC had no WheelRadius ( ) entry. After correcting this the wheels appeared.

More generally, the wag files created by 3DC need a lot of tweaking to get the physics right.
