Creating Passenger Carriage Interior View

Post by streeter »

Sorry - I've done a search through the forums and drawn a blank.

After a visit to the Bluebell Railway today, I wanted to try my hand at creating a carriage interior view. Does anyone know where I can find a Tutorial to help me occupy my next Wet Weather Day Off???

Thanks guys!

Streeter,

Look through the .doc files on the MSTS CD. This is about the only subject that KUJU explain properly.

I posted this pic a long time ago, and now I can find it using the Search either, so here it is again. Hope it gives you some idea:

How the interior passenger view model was put together. I started with a coach, and built the basic compartment inside it, to get the size and position correct (it has the same frame axis point as the coach). Then I deleted most of the original coach and added lots of detail to the compartment.

The passenger view is a separate model on its own. It can be put into the same folder as the coach, or into a common folder. If you do the latter, you have to edit the .S file and add some path information to the .ace file names. The .wag file has a line that specifies the passenger view model name, and the position and orientation of the camera within it.

Thanks. It seems a bit complicated, seeing as I haven't yet mastered GMax, but I think I'll dissect a few of the existing passenger views and see if I can work out how they were created.

It's the Bulleid coach set I'm particularly keen to get under way, with the author's permission, to offer as an alternative to the default Guard's periscope view!

I'm not sure what else you can find out. Ian's screen shot shows the kind of thing.
The bottom line is you need to be able to model to do any of it really. Probably easier to do a passenger view than an item of rolling stock though.

There is a different way to do this though, if you look at the Sentinal railcar I uploaded this week, the carriage was made in one part with all the seats inside it. Look in the .eng file to see how the passenger view is set up.

I'm not arguing (just explaining why I'm right).

Thanks for your help!

Buffy, you've convinced me to buy Train Sim Modeller as I've got nowhere with GMax and TSM is supposed to be an easier program for a novice to get to grips with!

If, as the German pig said to the butcher, the worst comes to Der Wurst, then I'll have a project to beat the wet weather blues!

TSM is not the best product, but it may be the easiest to start with. (Others will probably disagree though).

I might have sounded a bit short before, but the point I was trying to make is that if you want to build proper passenger views, you need to be able to 3D model it.
Everything else falls into the useful information section if you can't actually build a model for the interior you want.

Well I just tried my first attempt at a passenger view and think I will need some more help.

Firstly more modelling will be needed, I made the sides as 'flat' textures shaped to the tumblehome of the coach - and they look like cardboard cut out sides, so definitely will have to give some 3D depth to them. with windows set in the middle... more polys.... more work

Then texture, perhaps more and larger... a wood texture of about 200 pixels square for one side looks seriously ugly close up!

Lastly a wee problem, I can see one running rail through the floor at present. The floor is solid material and i cannot see the other rail or anything in between. I will try adjusting the viewpoint and see... or is this a known problem?
Regards
