Smoke Colour
Are there any eng experts out there who can cast their thoughts on this? The smoke on steam loco's varies in quantity and colour (black to white), diesels only vary in intensity and volume. Would it be possible to make a diesel produce white smoke under acceleration? I am thinking of an eng file mod for a deltic to produce tons of white clag on acceleration.

I am not sure if that can be done, but it is a great idea!!!!jimmyladd wrote:Are there any eng experts out there who can cast their thoughts on this? Unfortunately it isn't possible. There is only one clag colour in MSTS1 - and that is black... and also clag cannot be made to vary with acceleration, just the amount of power the engine is putting down, i.e. 0% throttle = little clag, 100% throttle = lots of clag. Yet another annoying limitation of MSTS I'm afraid.

That is coded into the sim engine to represent the changes caused by the adding and burning of coal, and the presence of air, or otherwise within the firebox.jimmyladd wrote:How dose msts change the colour of clag with a steam engine?

Beer is not a matter of life and death. It is much more important than that.

If you think about it, the black smoke coming out of diesels is not very realistic. I've seen a lot of large US diesels haul really heavy loads on stiff grades over the passes both up in Northern as well as Southern California passes. Are they smoking, yes - but it's more grey than the black stuff in MSTS and not to the extent as suggested by the simulator.
Anything diesel that gives off the amount of black smoke (as suggested by MSTS) within the State of California is probably in serious need of a visit to the shops, and within the State of California, with its tough Air Quality Laws, would in all likelihood be also facing a stiff fine.
To address the problem, there is an ace file in the global directory that is used for diesel smoke. You can edit/replace that with something perhaps more prototypical.
