Duchess Dimensions

Post by flyingscot »

Hi guys,

I'm (hopefully) starting to build a Duchess in GMAX (which'll probbaly take until I'm drawing my pension but never mind), and I'm after some dimensions.

I've already got all the wheel diameters and dimensions e.g. between wheel centres, overall height , length and width.....

But what I don't have, and I can't find them anywhere, are dimensions like the length, width and height of the main frames, also the size of the frame extensions under the firebox etc. Then there's smokebox diameter, increasing to the max diameter of the boiler itself.......Footplate heights......the list is endless!!!!!!

Would anyone know where to find these measurements? I don't know if it might just be a case of guess or not....

If anyone has an idea of where to find them (apart from a trip to the NRM for example) I would be eternally grateful....

Cheers

I would actualy suggest getting in touch with the NRM, we formed good links with them at Cab-it Weekend and as a result will probably help us more. If you say you're a member of UKTS and are looking to make a duchess they will either let you into the archeive collection of drawings where you can find just about everything you want and/or allow you access to Duchess of Hamilton for photographing/measuring.

You might want to spend £16 or so on "LMS pacifics" by JWP Rowledge available from http://www.nenevalley-railwaybooks.co.uk or you might be able to find a copy elsewhere (saw one in a 2nd hand bookshop in Loughborough over Christmas) - I've got another copy (its a bit technical in places, but quite readable and should have the info you need) and I can recommend it.

For other info you might want to contact Dave Bran, especially because I think that he and Brian Walker have plans for his Ivatt Duchess to be retroed (there still isn't a Lizzie though ;) )

Andy,

Thats sounds like a great idea, and I'd really appreciate it!!! I guess Id' just need to convert the sizes to full scale which shouldn't be a problem.

Although it Dave & Brian are redoing their Duchess I doubt I'd get mine anywhere near as good, especially as they know what they're doing and I haven't got a clue!!!!!

Well, we are, in fact, to a degree, we have........but it's a very dangerous assumption that we know what we are doing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have several incomplete Stanier variants with "pick and mix" on full skirted cabs, full footplate, no deflectors. They have been on hold for some time as we are trying to improve the graphics.......this model suffered from the "reduced palette on display in sim" problem, making decent shading and lining impossible.

Having completely re-mapped the boiler in sections things have improved a bit, but alignment work still in progress.............

I'd love a Princess Class...........6200 "The Princess Royal" in LMS lake with Fowler tender, single chimney and domeless boiler please........to contrast the Duchess appearance as much as possible...... :P :P

Just as a side note, if anybody is still interested, my streamlined Coronation class project is still alive (but in intensive care). I'm probably going to switch over to gMax which, but definately intend to get it done...

City of Birmingham will still be first off the production line, don't ask for dates, its been going on nearly 2 years now on way or another, so it'll be done when its done !

There were some drawings of non- and de-streamlined Coronations in Model Rail magazine last year. If you're interested, I'll look up the pertinent issue...

Hey paul long time mate!!!

I did wonder on a few occasions what happened to that marvellous streamliner of yours.....

But those drawings would be perfect, I actually remember a few months back they had the drawings in Railway Modeller, which I did buy, but very cleverly decided to through that issue out.....

DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But whenever you get some free time the drawings would be most appreciated...

Cheers

Long time indeed! I can't let the project which (inadvertently) started the first major UKTS online squabble die! That and the fact that I put so much effort in (and received so much help from others) that I don't want to go to waste.

Just for those who have joined the forums in the past year or so, here's a golden oldie for you in case you were wondering what we're talking about:

Image

Yes, that is the default Royal Scot tender, and yes there is (was) a correct one in production.

When I've finished the 202 for Nolly I'll probablt start doing a bit more work on her (along with my other projects). I want to get the 202 done though as after that I intend to switch from TSM to gMax and don't really want to use the two in parralel if I can help it.

I'll have a shufty through my magazines tonight and be in touch.

I still have the CD of sound recordings and will hopefully make some use of it before too long...

I'd forgotten just how good that model was!!!!!!!

I've had a bash with the sounds too and have the beginnings of a Duchess sound set, a lot fine tuning needs doing to get the sounds looping correctly....

The Whistle isn't too bad though......seems to loop pretty well.......

Like I said though Paul, only when you get a chance to have a look ok?

Cheers

You little beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's exactly what I was looking for!!!

Now all I need to do is decide whether to do it in 3DCanvas or Gmax....

Opinions anyone??

Oh, yeah and it might be a good idea to find some time to do it too!!!!!

Cheers again
