Hi There,
Just an update on the J50
This one looks like it is going to be a J50/1
We now have brakes, safety valves and some funny tap like things on the front. I have also made some new frames which are a bit more like the right shape.

Hi There,
I have welded a few more bits on to it
What I am having a problem finding is a photo of a back end of the loco. If any one has such a photo they could let me see? Even a picture of the back of a Lima model may do though it was not thought to be very accurate

Searched high and low for a photo of the J50 backside.
I have an article on detailing the Lima model with good photos of everything but the rear end. The text says he only replaced the lamp brackets with plasticard.
I found this photo of LMR 601 Kitchener with 68956 in the background.
This shows that there were no handrails. The two dots apear to be lamps.
Note also the NB style footboard under the bunker.
This photo shows 68927.
Both photos at Eastfield.
Shy creatures the J50s. The Eastfield ones shunted Cadder Yard.

Here's a snippet from the edge of another loco photo.
68956 has now lost it's extended footboard but you can see the suppport bracket and the handrail.

Hi Ian,
Many thanks, that shot is way better than anything I have. The last shot shows some good bunker detail. I see the insides of the coalrails have been steel sheeted.
The footboard maybe a local shed addition. It is a class of loco with a lot of variations which makes it even harder. Dimensions for the variations is by guesswork folks.
I will finish just one model probably 68897 or 68896 as they are the ones I have been able to get good images of.
If any others are required. Request with acompanying photograph please.
The next task is to add some ribbing around the cab doors and along the top of the tanks.

The extended footstep was a standard feature on NBR locos.
It was used by shunters.
Cowlairs fitted it to any foreign loco sent to scotland including the J72.
I an pointing it out as a Scottish version of the loco will be suitable for Scottish Central.

This looks like it might share a good deal of the J50's parts? Check the text.
I'll see if I've anything in books I can scan.

Just found a shot, but sadly a side one rather than rear one, of a late J50 with exactly the same type of bunker as the link to the Q class above. Other pictures show that the version Ian found the picture of above seems to have been almost a standard on Gresley/Thompson Tanks. Only variation seems to be high level brake pipes on passenger loco's.
Geoff
PS Scanner a problem atm but I'll scan thge later version and post ASAP. You might want to model both?

Hi Gents
Many thanks for the helpful replies.
Please carry on posting any info.
