Hierarchy Porbs

Post by HondaCTR »

can someone please explain/list how the hierarchy works as I seem to be having a few problems with my Gmax model. The problem is i have a 'main' part with two bogies as seperate children which works fine. I then added a wheel (wheel1) on the right hand side and made it a child of bogie1. This also works fine. I then added another wheel on the left hand side and attached it to the other wheel to make an axle1 and again made it a child of bogie1 ( sorry if i havent explained it well. Are you still with me.) now when I go to covert to .s everything goes nasty and crashes Gmax.

Can anyone give me a 'tree' /hierarchy that works?

thanks V Much

Sorry I'm not a modeller but I thought that if you had bogie1 and bogie2 you had to have wheels11, wheels12, wheels13 (say) and wheels21, wheels22, wheels23. 'Wheels' being a wheelset of 2 tyres plus axle.

OK.

Main
|
| Bogie1
| |
| Wheels11
| Wheels12
| Wheels13
|
| Bogie2
|
Wheels21
...

'Wheelsxx' objects automatically animate, so that's something less to worry about. However, they must be a fused wheelset (axle and a number of wheels) to work properly. I think that any other arrangement woudl confuse the sim.

Cheers

Gmax is beyond the ken of mortals.

Have you tried the Gmax forum?

Have you looked at the MS tech docs? (On MSTS CD 2)

It would appear that you have fouled the hierachy by adding/removing items improperly. Start by rebuilding your hierachy:

1) Open the LOD Manager and select "Remove LOD Data from Max Scene" from the Operations dropdown.
2) Select all parts and select the unlink icon in the Gmax main tool bar.
3) Relink all wheels to bogies, bogies to main, etc.
4) Add the assembled object to the LOD Manager
5) Add a value to the LOD Distance box.
6) Export. :)
Cheers!
