Caledonian Class 294 "Jumbo"

Post by mickrik »

Hi All,

Here is the first work in progress shot of my rendidtion of a Caledonian Railway Class 294 as designed by the great Dugald Drummond. I am going to make mistakes as I am working from a sideview drawing and some old photos. But thanks to Cardean, he has come up with some drawings of a LSWR class 700 (Black Motor) which is another Drummond design and there appears to be a lot of similarities between the two classes.

This first screenshot is quite rough as I am assembling the components to make the main outline shape. The last thing I have done is put a Roof on the Cab. Next I will construct the front flange for the smokebox and smokebox door.

constructive comment is greatly welcome

I must brave the spiders in the loft and dig out my DJH model.
Seems accurate so I'll take a ruler to it.

I've also got the 3F big jumbo and the Pickersgill superheated 0-6-0 converted from the 2-6-0 kit.

I think the LSWR loco was bigger than a Jumbo. Closer to the 3F and almost identical to a Barney.

If it's got buffers it's Chain.

Hi Ian,

Yest the 700 is about 6' longer and has the same wheelbase as th Barney. I have made the front smokebox flangeplate and a smokebox door, I am just trying to get the proportions right.

You have a model of a "Jumbo".

nice one!.

Hi There,

I have added a few more bits and decided the boiler dimensions did not look right. I have reduced the diameter and it looks much better. This came about as I could not line up the cabview windows to a position that looked right.

Hi There,

Many thanks for showing interest and for the posative comments.

This is where I have been using Decapod's wonderful "Piper" plug-in on the handrails and exhaust valve control.

I think I have got the smoke box door correct for this version. There were some that had a plain door surround without the turnkeys but used the door darts instead.

Still need to do the safety valves and whistle and I think that will complete the boiler.

Hi All

just keep this thread up to date

I have fashioned some buffers which look the right shape and added a screw link coupling with vacuum hose. I noticed on a couple of photos from above that the cab roof has 2 ribbing bands so I have fitted those. I have also made a frame around the side driver lean out points and fitted the handrails accordingly. The last item fitted is the reverseing rod.

Next the Westinghouse Pump Gear

Excellent progress Mick.

If I can get BB and the Schools finished soon we'll have a glut of new MSTS locos :)

Hi Decapod

With these and some of the projects in the pipeline, it could be a golden year for MSTS.

HI There,

I have finished construction for the Loco. I have checked it against several photos and I think I have captured the shape ok.

here is the final result

I have remade some of the components since the last update. The cabsides now form the wheel splasher which should make for better texturing and likewise the front Boilermount/Sandboxes now extend as the wheelsplasher and now have a more correct curvy shape as with the cab front.

I will make a mock up cab to form a texture file and retain as many cab components as MSTS will allow me to run with. This I will do after I have built the tender which is the next part of the project which I will probably start on tomorrow.

I made a mock up cab for the my first 8F fully textured and made a screenshot of it inside3D canvas. I turned the screenshot into an ace file and used this ace file for the Black5's the Princess Royals and the new Fairburn. Likewise this mock up I should be able to use in any of the ex-Caledonian models I hope to produce.
