Finally started work on a Caledonian cab, my first Westinghouse braked cab.

I would look to include a similar oil can to the one shown. If there is anyone working on a preserved line, a picture of a similar oil can would be much appreciated.

Also need to know how the fire doors opened - it looks like part opened upward and part downward - has anyone seen something like this? What kind of fire doors do they have on the preserved Caley locos?

The picture I worked from seems to be a dual braked loco (vacuum gauge to the left of my Westinghouse gauge)...
Would the device beneath the cab window have been the vacuum brake or the air brake apparatus - I am not sure if the one lower down would have been where the air brake handle was...

I am also guessing that the apparatus next to the RH injector would have been the reducing valve for carriage heating - but it looks a bit complex - again any pictures or information welcome - I am pretty sure that the gauge above it is for the carriage warming apparatus.

Any assistance much appreciated.

Thanks Mick, between them the pictures helped to clarify things.
On 124 I can see the Westinghouse brake handle... So I can figure out now what must be the Westinghouse brake on 903.

A bit more resolution on 903 and 117 shows the top bit must be for the vacuum brake, because it leads to a large pipe leading outside on the left of the boiler which must go to the ejector. (Now I assume this to be an LMS addition, but in the drawing there is a lamp on the cabside - these were not carried in LMS times...)

Over to the right on 117 what i thought might be for heating, is separate and leads out of the RHS of the cab, so this must be for the Westinghouse pump.

Slowly the picture is coming together...

Still would like to double check how the CR fire door works... and still hunting a nice photo of the oil can...

Hi Darwin,

I agree on the 177 cab. You can just see the edge of the westinghouse pump outlined on the right hand side. The pipe appears to come from it to an operating lever on the top right hand face of the firebox.

Looking at blown up line drawings from forty years of Caladonian Locomotives 1882 to 1922 the Air valve would be under the spectical glass and what appears to be a dreadnought type vaccum brake to the right of it, if you need these drawings just shout and will gladly pass on.

Hi John,

Well, :oops: :oops:

I have got the basic chassis and solebars made, I just don't seem to have enough time.

I am still finishing off the Fairburn. I have spent 6 hours today so far just working on the cab and tankside lining. Hopefully it will be finished by the weekend.

I will line out the bunker perhaps later or tomorrow then I still have to fit the tank top fillers.

Lets keep MSTS alive and kicking.
Absolutely

I have at least 2 more new moels planned for this year.

Some nice pics on the SRPS site, which brings me back again to cab questions...

(1) Picture 31 - driver has hand on the vacuum brake handle = is the air brake handle somewhere?

(2) Pictures 32 and 33 - the four gauges from left to right are vacuum, boiler pressure, Westinghouse (and ?steam heat?) I am guessing this would be the same order on all Caley locos - but it is not the order I put them in... time for a rearrange.

(3) Picture 34 - the handle in front of the fireman should be for the Westinghouse pump.

How's your Drummond jumbo coming along?
Work is now coming along nicely, I have got the boiler, Front Boiler Mounting Box, Firebox, smokebox, cabsides and wheelsplashers now fitted onto the chassis. I am currently working out the profile for the cab front panel and the cab roof.

I am working with rough dimensional shapes and improving them as I go along.

I think I will have to start a new thread as I think I will need some input from you guys as to wether you think it looks ok. Bear in mind I am doing it from a rough side profile drawing and some old photos.

Hi Mick,

Out of all the drawings and diagrams I have of the Caley Locos, the Drummond jumbo is the one class I don't have anything on. :x

What I can send you, is a scan of Dugald's brother Peter's Barney for the Highland Railway and because I've managed to buy Don Bradley's book on the Drummond locos of the LSWR, I can send you a GA drawing of the 700 Class.

If you think any of this will help, let me know. :)
