tile scenery lost
I had a strange problem with my route last night and several errors. Now every object on one tile has disappeared. Is there any way of retreiving this data without resorting to a back up (which due to a miniscule hard drive i don't have.) I may consider giving up on the route because of this. I have lost a large amount of trackwork and scenery and it is infuriating.

Right.
Do you know what the x and y Tile numbers are. eg. -6102, 15027
this is what is used by msts to write the world file's, which is the file which contains the placed object's.
When MSTS save's a new file it back's up the old one. So if you have these co-ordinate's you can find the file and restore the backup.
The filename for my example would be w-6102+15027.w so the backup has an extra .bk extension.
I suggest you backup the file before you try this. Usually will fit on an A drive Disk. Save's HD space.
Hope you can save the route.

Why does DOS never Say Excelent Command or filename ?!!?!??
To Err is human, computers output the errors at higher speed.

I have tried this but i believe that i saved it before i fully realised what happened. I was deleting all the signal markers etc and i must of saved it after i had done this. I think i will probably rebuild the section as it is not much trackwork.
Unfortunately i have lost a yard full of sidings and a single platform station, and most of the scenery that goes with them.

The scenery objects will still be in the bk file. You didn't delete them manually in RE did you? So they are still in the latest backup world file. Go back into RE and hover your camera over the bald tile and note the number as per Alan's post above. Now close RE and go into the WORLD folder of your route. Cut the .w file out that corresponds to these co-ordinates (as mentioned above it'll fit on a floppy or you can put it somewhere in your general route backup area). Now highlight the other file with these co-ords (the one with the .bk extension) and rename it to the .w file extension. This will restore the scenery and track pieces on the tile. I have gone through this process numerous times
it does work.
Caution: Your track database probably still exists. On the bald tile do you still have the white track lines? If you do then relaying track on this tile isn't going to help you, you will just have a duplicated set of track on this tile which is going to cause even more harm.

Have you got another backup - the most recent, just copy that w file into your World folder and see what happens. I'm trying various ideas because I know from bitter experience how frustrating it is to lose a whole tile of scenery

It's sad that Microsoft should release software that's so buggy that it causes so much upset to its users. It is easy to spend ages trying to get something just right when the black screen of death rears its head. Even saving what your doing there and then doesn't always work. In fact it can often be better to exit without saving; but it can be very frustrating.
How Microsoft can get away with their statement in the manual that the Editors and Tools are NOT supported by Microsoft Product Support Services I do not know. I would have thought that is illegal, if they do not support them, then they should at least say who does. However, having sold the product one would think they have a moral responsibility to support it. They are happy to receive our dosh for it. I suppose once we've got all the bugs ironed out for them with the send/don't send messages, they'll proudly present a less buggy version for another £35 on top of what they will charge for MSTS 2. If MS read this, it really isn't good enough - it's your product 'cause it's in your box, yes it works to a point, but why should users have to suffer because they do use it. I would have thought you would want users to point out problems so you could get them fixed- not pretend that it is nothing to do with you. It's a good job Microsoft don't sell TV's, as no doubt their remote controls wouldn't work and they would say that the remote controls were nothing to do with them, so they cannot help. They wouldn't even say sorry that purchasers couldn't change channels.
How many posts in the forum are effectively groans about the editors when people either haven't got a clue what to do with them (bravo for Michael Vone who spotted a market opportunity), or the grief caused when perhaps several months hard work has been lost.

ps Sorry, I can't offer any help with your current problem, but can recommend Zipping your whole route file daily so the backups takes up less room on your hard drive, and keep these safe until you have enough to burn onto a CD or save them to a Zip disk. Then at the worst, you'll only loose a day's work. If all goes wrong again one day, just delete your current route file in the ROUTE folder, and replace it with an earlier version having simply unzipped it!
