Thameslink

Post by Horgy »

Has anyone found a way to use two different power supplies in MSTS? My route inclueds a bit of the Thameslink (Elephant & Castle - Farringdon) and I wan't to get dual power on them in preparation for a possible route extension, can this be done?

err, no.

just electrify the whole thing and then stick the gantries where necessary. and use the 3rd rail tracks. perhaps.

silly game!

I'm just thinking in terms of the AC / DC version of the 319's, it looks like ill do that, 3rd rail it all and place gantries appropriately..

That'll do. I have the same problem on Woodhead - I have at least one branch which has never been electrified and it looks a bit iffy with wires hovering...

Any one thought of building gantries with the wires attached?

Well you could just make sections of the wire, and attach them to the gantries.. But that involves working out gradients and distances for curves and im no good at that, so i'll stick to Charing Cross and Third Rail.. :)

Didn't actually occur to me there are problems like this on other routes.. Are there any more?

In reality, the overhead lines are straight (but maybe a little sagging for expansion and contraction on hot and cold days), not curved on curves or points! So you don't have to calculate anything.

That is quite true, notice on pantographs, the top bit that takes the power to the the motor is quite wide to take the wire on curves.

Never known wire to go in a curve, unless it is possible?

the wire also weaves from side to side on straight bits. to prevent it wearing a hole in the middle of an other wise perfectly untouched pantograph. I think if someone could come up with lengths of decent looking wires... what am i saying? who could be bothered to electrify hundreds of miles of track manually? the msts wires look . anyway. they're tram wires strictly speaking on the straight bits! just no-one use the msts wires. have it "3rd rail" electrified, and put gantries around. looks a bit off, but i can't suggest anything better! no wires and the posts looks infinitely better than a floating wire.

Further to that problem, does anyone have any idea how the Thameslink Loop from london Bridge to Blackfriars is set out? I know its one track, but then it goes to 2 track as it joins the main thameslink lines from elephant and castle. At which point does it change? Quail map doesnt have distances, and the OH pics I have arent detailed enough to make out the tracks! Anyone help? Else I'll have to ad lib this bit..

The OH at Farringdon follows the track to Moorgate, no OHL follows the line into Snow Hill Tunnel.

The OHLE finishes at farringdon for snow hill tunnel, Farringdon still has the old pan down signs presumably second hand from another station.
from farringdon to london bridge is pretty twisty towards Kings cross thameslink, then rather straight forward from what i remember. On departing St Pauls thameslink your right on the 1 in 29 climb through blackfriars tunnel, st pauls platform end where the CCTV screens are is on the gradient and the start of black friars is at the top of the gradient.
as for the trackwork out of blackfriars to londonbridge well all i know is the it goes left follows the side of a large office then drops into the approach lines at londonbridge turning slightly right.

Not really sure now actually :)

It's branded Connex SouthEastern, and is basically the southern region. It's starting along the Charing Cross - Dartford via Sidcup lines, but i've also put in trackwork for South Bermondsey, Cannon Street, Blackfriars, City Thameslink and Elephant & Castle. Should be interesting, progress shot below..

I worked out the Thamelink loop actually..
