Is it a 10GB download? Why do people presume that a certain file size threshold always necessitates a DVD?

Well by the same logic, why do people assume that everyone's capable of, or happy downloading 10GB's worth of files? DVDs are quick and easy where large files are involved (very likely given the scope of Dave's V6 of the Dorset Coast route, when you consider the size of the files for the associated stock, consists etc as well). Almost everyone has a CD drive that reads DVDs these days so, as a medium for installing large files, it gives the best results and a backup too, should anyone delete their download. Can't see the problem myself...

The existing Dorset Coast V3 is 653MB on the CD. Versions 4 and 5 bumped the size up somewhat. Therefore version 6 will be even bigger.

Therefore it will have to be a DVD for physical media. Whether the same package will be a downloadable item is not yet clear. There is no technical reason why it couldn't be - I regularly download multi-gigabyte packages.

As far as I know it was always intended to make V6 available as a DVD since if it was simply a download with multiple parts then the first thing a load of people ask is "can I get it on CD ?". The CDs / DVDs are pretty much plug and go - put the disc in the drive, run all the options in turn and away you go. No unzipping and moving stuff about etc.

My backed up DC5 (route only) is 350mb compressed, so would fit easily on a CD, I would suspect that the route for DC6 would also fit on a CD, however the stock & acts would take us over the size of a CD.

My preference would be for the route updates to be released first (as download) and then once some newer activities are created using the extended route and free stock, for the disc edition to be compiled.

Just come across this looks excellent, finlly my local stretch of line appearing in MSTS. Looking forward to it, if you need any help around the Andover station area i have several pics etc. I might finally be able to recreate my avatar! a Bulleid flying down through Andover.

As a new activity becomes available for DC I download and install the required stock for later use. I have just done a check on my folder sizes for the DC6 route and DC6 stock - OK Uncompressed, but they are at 857 Mb and 2568 Mb respectively,

So I suspect a fairly full DVD when it is all complete.

There will be a downloadable update for the route exactly as I did for V4 and V5, but the new activities with all the stock will go on a DVD. Of course you will not have to buy the DVD as all of the stock and activities are available to download.

Hi Dave. I Appreciate at this point it's very early with V6 still to come as well as your MT work, but have you considered if there will be any further expansions of DC now that MSTS2 has been dropped.

I think it would be popular.

Regards

Steve

P.S. I'm not a proud man - I will beg on this very website if required.

Steve,

It is always possible, but I think that there may be some more MT work coming up to keep me busy.
