BRISCARD V3 UPGRADE

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

We're on track (pardon the pun!) so far.

Next, insert your MSTS CD 1 into your CD drive. From the menu that appears, select UNINSTALL. This will completely uninstall your original installation from your system, but don't worry - your existing installation is now safely copied with a different name.

After that, please re-boot your computer. Let me know please when all this is done.

We're about half-way through the process now! :)

Ash,
Dunit!
There still remains in the 'old' Train Simulator the routes I downloaded in addition to the basic disc ones.
Otherewise, everything has gone as predicted.

Well done Alan. Delete everything from the old folder that still exists please - that is, the entire C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games folder.

Shouldn't take long.

Right. Now that's all done, all records of your MSTS installation in your Windows Registry should have been erased.

Next step - Re-boot your PC again, then re-install MSTS using your original CDs, but make sure that when asked, you confirm the install path as being C:\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator, rather than the default location in program files. Ensure you do a complete installation, including all the default routes.

Come back here once that's done.

OK. Here's the final , crucial bit.

Firstly, check that your new MSTS basic installation works.

Then exit MSTS, and Using Windows Explorer, go to your copied C:\RAIN SIMULATOR folder, right-click on this folder, and select COPY. As before, this will take some time, as it will copy your entire original installation to the windows clipboard.

Once this is complete, go to your new C:\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator folder, then right click on the Train Simulator folder and select PASTE. When asked if you wish to over-write the existing items, click YES.

This will copy all of your old files into your new installation. Because you've re-installed, anything you install from now on, such as the Dorset Coast route CD, will expect to find MSTS in this new location (because the Windows Registry values have now changed) rather than the old C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator location that was causing the problem.

At this stage, do not delete the RAIN SIMULATOR folder.

Let me know when your copying is done.

Well done.

You should now have a new installation of MSTS that is not in any way affected by the Vista security protocols.

Next thing to do is to go into Train Store, then go to TOOLS, OPTIONS, MSTS FOLDER..., select the folder where your new MSTS installation now resides (i.e C:\ Microsoft Games\Train Simulator).

Once you've done this, I would run MSTS in the normal way (through Train Store if that's how you do it) to test that it works as expected and that you still have access to all your old routes and downloaded stock.

Then, try installing your Dorset Coast CD - hopefully it should now install and run without a problem. Let me know if you encounter any difficulties.

There's also a trick you can use with MSTS Bin to maximise the available system memory that MSTS can use - Dorset Coast in particular can benefit from using this, as it uses a lot of system resources due to the complexity of the route. If you've not heard about this, let me know and I can talk you through it, it's a very quicjk and easy procedure. :D

Once you are satisfied that everything works OK, you can delete the RAIN SIMULATOR folder.

Best of luck!

PS Ah,
I note that although Rain Simulator has been transferred, the routes etc are still separate in a Rain Simulator file.

OK - my mistake.

If you now have a sub-folder within MSTS called RAIN SIMULATOR, please delete it.

Using Windows Explorer, re-name your original, copied C:\RAIN SIMULATOR folder to C:\TRAIN SIMULATOR, and repeat the copy and paste routine I mentioned above. That is, right click on C:\TRAIN SIMULATOR (now renamed from Rain Simulator) and paste it into C:\MICROSOFT GAMES\TRAIN SIMULATOR, saying YES if asked whether you wish to over-write files.

Hi Ash,

Sorry to interrupt, but I think you should paste from C:\TRAIN SIMULATOR to C:\MICROSOFT GAMES, otherwise you'll get a TRAIN SIMULATOR folder within C:\MICROSOFT GAMES\TRAIN SIMULATOR with the result that nothing would be overwritten!

Cheers,
Ged

EDIT: Sorry, thought I'd better correct the destination folder name in my original post

Yes Ged, you're right of course.

Alan - if you're still with us, do what Ged has confirmed - paste your old TRAIN SIMULATOR folder that you have re-named from RAIN SIMULATOR into C:\MICROSOFT GAMES, over-writing where asked.

Oh dear, It took quite a while to do the transfer and as it's just finished, I wondered how the 'old' routes etc., were going to amlgamate with the new ones.
I'll be back!
