Marine Station Track Plan(DOVER)

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Marine Station Track Plan(DOVER)

Post by RossEP »

Greetings,
Im a fairly new person to MSTS and this site so PLEASE forgive me if i'm asking daft questions!!

I've been on every possible search engine hunting for track plans for the Marine Station and surrounding goods areas with NO LUCK!! Im eventualy looking to do a reconstruction of this area and, hopefully, then the rest of the area. I've found a few sites with some great photos on but these alone are not detailed enough. Does anyone know of any sites with plans, or local/national resourses that may have? Ideally, this would be around the late 70s-early 80s time....but beggars n choosers springs to mind!!

My second query is....I've read somewhere about a tool that takes infomation from OS maps and plots it onto a route....Whats it called please?

Hope someone can help, it would be appreciated GREATLY.....I'm trying to re-live my childhood!!

You are unlikely to find historic track layouts on the web. Take a look at my post in the route building "All Newcomers..." sticky for other sources.

Right above that is a guide to Terraforming using public DEM data; you can terraform an entire route in a few minutes with this method (read it through to the end, it's become easier since the initial post) and I strongly suggest you try this first. Manual contour tracing from OS maps gives a higher quality result but is very fiddly and time consuming and requires the use of a payware program such as TS Tools or TS Terraform (TSTF), neither of which are still supported.

Alternatively, you should consider building your route in Kuju's new rail simulator which promises to be much more friendly to route builders than MSTS.

Just in case you haven't seen my photos of Dover marine, have a look in the Black and White Nostalgia and Southern Steam sections of my website. Hope they help.
Alan

My railway photos are now on Google + - links to the albums are in this thread http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewtopic. ... 9&t=149558

Lots of steam and early diesels from 1959 to 1963.

Cheeers folks, will be looking into all suggestions carefully.

Just got home from a model railway exhibition at the Leas Cliff Hall and got a great book, England South and London Underground(2nd Ed) by TRACKmaps. It hasnt got the Marine in it but has got all the lines in the area. Really need the 1st edition of it (with the Marine in) but its a real find for later work.

Spoke to alot of the local club members and they've put me onto several local sources. Also got some photos of my own today....

BIG THANKS...Rp

Second hand book shops are another useful source of information. I managed to pick up the entire 1989 - 1990 passenger timetable for BR for a few pounds on holiday this year. I am sure the guy in the shop had no idea why someone would want an old timetable .......
Kindest regards

First off, are you local to the Dover area? im geussing from the fact you went to the Folkestone exhibtion you are not all that far away.
I would suggest going into the Libary in Dover, as im sure they will have old OS maps in the reference section and you are able to take a certain amount of copies, to which they will advise you the exact legal position.

Also May i suggest purchase or borrowing from the libary some of the Middleton Press books covering Dover, Ashford to Dover is possible the best. These books have OS maps with track plans for most areas, and im sure Dover Marine was included.

The Ashford Libary did have a large collection of railway books and other bits covering all lines but a large amount of SR for obvious reasons, however i have not been in for a few years and they were reduceing the collection when i last visted so may not be that much anymore but certainly worth a look.

Hi RossEP
The first place I search for track plans are Local Library's, they contain 6in to the mile line drawings.

I have some track diagrams for Dover marine, not Dover town or Shakespear sidings, I just have the Marine station, when l get home off nights and some sleep l'll try and dig them out and scan for you and post them up, say mid Sun afternoon ?. They are actually quite common, l've seen copies in old railway magazines, the books ( Middleton press ) someone mentioned above has it as well and some books l have on rail ferries have them too, its just a case of finding the best set that suits your time era, the track plan didnt change much until the new rail ferry spur was added for the MV Nord Pas D Calais, l dont think l have plans for that but should have mid 70s or so.

Best

Here you go, maybe a bit early, 1950s but you should be able to get a general idea of what it was like and apart from the shed closing, not alot else changed over the years.
