easy! just try and judge a little more than the field of view in the default camera views for complex areas like cities and towns and dense woodland,
if you are in a deep cutting then just do along the tops and back from the edge about 50m
if you are in a sparsely populated area then go a little further and any features you need in the distance make sure they are going to be visible from the train when you place them, like I said view 2 and 3 are the biggies.
Some people will change their camera views to zoom out a bit further or get distance shots, I wouldnt worry so long as your ground texture extends into the distance in the sim.

One of the other features particularly of UK routes, which MTS really doesn't cater to, is the sheer volume and density of scrub and overgrowth that runs alongside most railway lines these days. Many stretches of track are almost like travelling through an avenue or tunnel of trees and even where there are gaps there is an inpenetrable jungle of brambles, gorse and various other bushes and weeds to chest height.

I agree Vern, but go back in time 50-60 years and the lineside fence is totally bare, nothing even approaching a sapling. A quick comparison between two shots of the same stretch of line will show how much more vegetation there is alongside railways today vs pre-war.
