Penzance to paddington

Post by wrightsie »

i am normally strictly southern, but was forced to traverse the lines of gwr yesterday, and it was quite good{not as good as the southern of course} i used gwr from exeter to bodmin, and the service train was the paddington to penzance, the views are stunning, i saw a thread about below, but with 166 posts i didnt read much, only enough to know that route was coming, is it here yet and is it the route i mentioned{all the way from penzance to paddington} and is it modern or steam. i would luv to drive this route with an hst and a kettle, the terrain is so demanding!!!

How many Megabytes is the route and how long from Paddington to Penzance?

Also, any branchlines off it such as the one to St. Ives???

Paddington - Penzance

Post by dwjoy »

The route is about 340 miles (via Castle Cary) and longer, of course, if via the Bristol, Swindon route. The track is layed, stations in place and work is proceeding on scenery. I have the help of a first class modeller who has provided a stunning Paddington Station.

HI Dwjoy

Can you just clarify please if you are creating the whole route from Penzance - Paddington? If so, will it be going via Swindon, or via Newbury, Westbury, etc? I didn't know about this. And it may possibly change my mind about creating the remainder of my route from Bristol - Swindon from Weston Super Mare. Good luck in creating this route if this is what you're doing.

I've never been further than Newton Abbot on this route. I think the streach between Exeter and Newton Abbot is nice, being next to the coast.

Penzance - Paddington

The track has been layed, branching just after Taunton and covers the Bristol - Swindon - Reading route as well as the Castle Cary - Westbury -Reading route. The piece between Exeter and Plymouth is pretty well complete - scenery, signals, etc and including branch lines to Kingswear, Chudleigh and Buchfastleigh and the Laira Yard. Also includes the branch line from Plympton to Shaugh, both of which are now gone - but they were there for the period we are modelling, 1945-1950

Ye, you did indeed keep this route quiet Dwjoy! Good luck with completing it. Being able to drive all the way from London - Penzance in one sitting will be the ULTIMATE experience in MS Train Sim. I for one can not wait!

However, on a slightly critical note though. Why have you kept this route so secret? I've been a member of these forums for 4+ months and the first I knew about the route was yesterday. I was planning to extend my route from Weston-Bristol as far as Reading via Swindon but have now had to cancel that plan when I read your posting. If I knew in advance I wouldn't have planned it! Imagine if someone else is also creating the very same route as you, and then they read your posting, they could be then in for a disapointment or vice versa with you.

anway, no hard feelings and good luck with completing this super route.

Penzance to Paddington

Post by dwjoy »

It hasnt been such a secret... see a post of mine dated June 18th, thread is 'Yer Tis'. That has a few screen shots and discussion about varous ways of laying a route.
Also, I would not advise anyone working on a similar route to abandon it. What if I abandon mine for any reason? There were many times in the past few weeks when I have considered deleting the whole mess off my hard drives. Major problem being coupling failures. After spending untold frustrating hours fussing with switches, it seems reasonably stable now. Also, size does indeed matter. The bigger the route, the more unstable it becomes. Right now, when my route is having its track db rebuilt, it doesnt seems to know when its finished and goes off in a Nortwesterly direction over white space. Pressing the Esc key restores order. Also, the Activity Editor occasionally freezes when pointed at the approx mid point of the route - its fine everywhere else. Routes are like a house of cards... the more you add on.... the worse it gets. Also, there remains a LOT of work on the route; just the scenery alone will take a long time.
I have zipped the route onto a CDROM and shipped it to my collaborator. He will work on it during August, while I climb up on the footplate and have some fun.

Just wondering with this Penzance-Paddington route. The Princetown branch onto Dartmoor should be easy (relatively!) - not a lot of scenery up there!!

Cheers 7&Y
