Why not try for something like the Severn Valley Railway and see how you get on. Then if you take to it you can always come up with something more grand in the future.

Oh yes! Roadside three-foot railway. 1 in 29. Thirty miles. Rollercoaster gradients. Viaducts. Best scenery in the world.

Hi all

How about the Isle of Wight Steam Railway? It's only 5 miles long but has good gradients

ooh ummmm short railways, steam era. WHSmiths and many other bookstores or libraries should have tons of by gone eras including branch lines. Just an exaple:- Wrexham Town > Bidston i think it used a GWR Auto train.

Mid Hants Railway
not to hard
4 stations
single line between stations, even the yard is basic, mainline connection one end and shunting neck at the other {end stations}. if you do choose this one, i can try to get track plans etc {i will explain the cause of them}. line photo's shouldnt be too hard, gradient boards on the platforms etc. and is there 2 severn valley lines, or is the one on mid east uk my imagination? if not then somerset and dorset please!
both are southern region railways {there are always a few who geniunly dont know}, i can provided stock details etc for mid hants and think i might have a contact on the S&D. please keep me informed 8)

Weston, Clevedon & Portishead, about 15 miles, fully self contained light railway using small tank engines and some quaint rolling stock. Oakwood Press do a useful book on it which probably has all you need to get started.

I think I like the idea of the Weston, Clevedon, and Portishead. Though the Cleobury Mortimer and Ditton Priors would be good too, the name is almost longer than the railway.

Yep CM&DP is quaint as well. Or the Golden Valley - Pontrilas to Hay. Has scope to be extended, and only about 12 miles long.

There's always the S&M railway ;)
(Shropshire and Mongomeryshire)

In fact, just about any of Col. Stephens' lines would be fun, Weston being one, EKR, S&M, ALR, K&ESR (I've not done anything on this for a few months) - I'm building stock for some of them at the moment.

"Railways of Arcadia" has info and track diagrams of most of them.
