I am thinking of making it if no-one else is-from Lewisham-Crossharbour is my first aim. I have absolutely no idea on how to build a route but I'll quickly learn. I have a spare week now, as I'm on half term (I'm 13). I pobably won't make it accurate (as in gradient research and all that) but, I'll see how it goes. If there's no demand, I won't do it.

So are you doing this for the benefit of other people or yourself?

Unless you plan on doing alot of modelling Id stick to something on the ground for your first route.

build it if you want to. My failed attempts at using the route editor taught me very little, but one of the things it did teach me was that you have to do it for your benefit.

i'd love to see this route, as my local line runs right past it (i live in gravesend, always travelling up to charing cross, i've always wanted to see a route that i'd recognise).

just a lil off the subject, but route building, is it easy? or is it incredibly hard? i'd love to give it a go one day, but don't know if the results will be as rewarding.

Why not find out?

Open up one of the default routes in RE and have a look around.

Then try laying a few lengths of track....look how easy it is to do simple things.

Then try and build two parallel lines with a cross over .........its not that easy at first.

Then try something more complex.....it'll be harder!

Is there a pattern here??

The bottom line is that building a "route" involves lots of eay things and lots of not so easy things. That's the challenge of route building! And you won't find out if you're any good at it unless you give it a try. A simple route will be easier to build than a complex or detailed route.

And when you get stuck.....and everyone does.....there's the Beginners Forum. Ask for help.....but do use the Search facility to see if the question has already been answered.

And the most important advice I can give......don't be impatient and give up at the slightest problem.

Try a fictional route on a handful of tiles first; you'll get a flavour of what's involved then.
And if you're serious, get hold of Michael Vone's Guide to Route building from Abacus ( http://www.abacuspub.com ). It costs a few quid, but is worth it.

O.k then, I'll try building a random route first. I'm doing it for everyone inc myself. I've been on it somany times that I pratically have a photographic memory of it! Thank for your advice, I'll let you know how it gets on. While I'm here, does anyone know what's happened to the Central Line and District Line? No-one uses the Underground forum anymore.

Mike Vone's guide to route building is an absolute must-have for ANYONE even remotely considering attacking the route editor, it will make your life incredulously easier.

I have some good news-which unfortunaely contains some bad news. The good news is that I have videoed the Tower Gateway-Beckton branch. The bad news is that I took them from my phone, and the quality isn't so good. But I have taken them on a station-station basis, with no sound, so they're 1-3 minutes long. I'll video Lewisham-Strratford later this week. If anyone has an MP4 player on their computer I'd be happy to email it to them to have a go at deciphering it. Any takers?
