East Suffolk Railway

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

I can strongly recommend the X-Keys from PI Engineering for route editing - makes life very easy indeed having a big bunch of specially labelled keys sitting right there.

Mosaic I can also strongly recommend, it's a wonderful piece of software, now I just have to get artistic so I can actually do my shunting route some justice :)

Markw is your man for the job! lol. I never worked Yarmouths (well I worked Liv St-Gt Yarmouth's but only to norwich & then changed crews) but as I no longer work for Oneglia, I am unable to do much, that said my girlfriend lives in Ipswich so I do drive there quite often so a £9 Anglia Plus to have a little investigation may be in order on my next visit!

Sorry, but a quick off topic: Jimbob, do you still work on the railways?

On Topic: This should be another great route from the master of the out of the way, or just plain weird, Mr Snijder

All quiet! This is your route builder speaking! Pay attention

According to my documentation, the Beccles to Great Yarmouth part of the ESR closed on November 2nd 1959, all services being diverted via Lowestoft from that date.

There were two swing bridges on that section, both over the river Waveney (it was the river that ran erratically, not the railway  ):

1. the Beccles single-track swing bridge which was replaced by a modern double track bridge in 1926;

2. The St. Olave's swing bridge which also was single-track and got replaced by a new double-track swing bridge in 1927.

Finally, there is the Oulton Broad swing bridge over Lake Lothing near Lowestoft which is on the Beccles to Lowestoft branch.

Since I intend to terminate the line at Gt Yarmouth South Town and only include those bits of the Norwich to Lowestoft lines that actually cross the ESR, I think the first two swing bridges is all I need to make. Now, since I have lived in Lowestoft and am tempted to model the Beccles to Lowestoft section (which would allow us to run trains from after 1959) I may end up building the Oulton Broad bridge as well.

But that is where I draw the line. No bridges on the Norwich lines. If you want them, you will have to build them yourselves.

There.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for the offer, I have got a couple of useful reference books (including the rather splendid volume by John Brodribb) that contain most of the track diagrams. If I find out that I am missing something I will get in touch.

One book I am keen on finding, but which is sadly out of print, is Volume 1 of the Great Eastern Engine Sheds. It should cover Gt Yarmouth, Lowestoft and Beccles amongst other things. Hopefully I come across a second-hand copy some day.

You are right, the station on the Framlingham branch is of course called Parham. I got confused with someone I know who is called Adrian Pelham!

Ideally I would like to have all pages containing diagrams and pictures of Beccles, Lowestoft and Gt Yarmouth South Town, but I suspect that would violate a few copyright laws!

Just a quick update on progress, it's all track laying at the moment. The section from Wickham Market via Saxmundham to Darsham is complete, as is the Framlingham Branch. In the other direction I've worked my way down towards Woodbridge but haven't started on the station layout just yet.

Over the next week or so I hope to get to Beccles via Halesworth. Beccles will be a challenge as it lies in a curve and has many parallel tracks, something not easily achieved in UKFS without having dynamic track.

I may put up some screenshots later.
