Ascot-Guildford, ideas, comments, requests

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

I am building my first route between Ascot and guildford. For anyone who knows the route you can put your ideas comments and request here.

For thoughs who don't look up this route on a map before you think of adding comments

Hi Mate

Never start off with a prototypical route, you'll never finish it. I reccomend getting the abacus Route builing guide, and starting on several fictional routes to get you started. This will enable you to learn all the techniques. This is what I did for 2 1/2 years, now I am finally starting to build real routes: the Foxfield, the Lyme Regis branch, perhaps the Ilfracombe line, as well as track only routes MHR, the bodmin & wenford and another secret route (sorry for the shameless route plug). As you can see when you start, you get hooked on it :D

I'd definitely buy the Abacus Route Building Guide. Don't worry too much about the buildings for now; use generic buildings and if all goes well, you can think about replacing station buildings, signal boxes etc. with new buildings at a later date. Most importantly, make sure that you choose a route that has plenty of information on it, including a gradient profile (to build a good prototypical route requires much research).

Don't let Chris put you off. My first route was the Swanage branch and that's about to go on sale!

I'm not putting him off Martin, merely advising him that 90% of the people who triumphantly say they are going to do a proto route end up dissapearing a month later because they didn't realise how hard it was, and they lose all their impetus. This is bad for all of us, as they are more than likely not going to try again, whereas people who start off gradually are far more likely to succeed. Mind you, he hasn't got a commercial company awaiting his route  (cant wait for Swanage by the way)

Hi

What do you mean? The ways of building a route are the same, whatever country it set in.

Chris,

Have you done anything on MHR yet ? The reason I ask is that I am just starting this route along with assistance from Matt Carey and dont want to really duplicate any work that you are doing or have done

Hi

Don't worry about it, I hadn't got to the stage of scenery placing yet. I hope to see some screenshots of it (default or UKFS?)
