Titfield Thunderbolt information.

Post by alan2 »

I decided to have a clear out of the floor in my Room. lol

I found a railway modeller with the Titfield thunderbolt in it :o i opened the page on the Magazine to this b/w picture of a loco with an extremely wide looking footplate.....

I read the description below to find that it was about the making of the titfield thunderbolt. ;)

I remember a few months ago (quite a few) someone mentioned that they wanted to build the route but had no idea where it was filmed or even what sections of line it was filmed on ;)

Well that information came to light in the August edition of Model Rail 2003.

The Routes name was "Limpley Stoke to Camerton Branch" I have a picture here which is of the loco during filming :) (I will try and scan it in a bit) :D

Hope someone can find information on the route and get us a Version of The titfield thunderbolt route out :P :D

There's also a lot of footage that wasn't used in the film - including a superb driver's view video - in 'Steam on 35mm volume 1' (I think) produced by Video 125 and narrated by the late John Huntley.

I have a small paperback booklet packed away somewhere that has map references for all the locations used in the film, describing the differences with how they look today.

About the only thing I do know about that film is that the one passenger coach they had came from the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway, home of the idiosyncratic 'Toby' style tram engines of the GER. Now I know that there are models of pretty well all the railwayana from the movie in the library, but how accurate is the colour scheme on that coach? And is anyone willing to reskin it for me into GER colours if need be so that I can have a genuine period coach to go with the Tram engines? I might even be tempted to try building a highly fictional W&UT to go with it one day - or year...

Hi, I come from that area and also have "The Camerton Branch" Book. It has plans for all the stations (even Midford Halt). The exact route is best done with Google Maps of course. One problem is the default SDJR RailWorks plan at Midford where the brook and roads etc are in the wrong positions. Would be glad to help though.

A German ex-train driver is, with my and others help, re-doing the WHOLE of the SDJR and plans to include a few hundred yards of the Camerton Branch either side of the Midford viaduct. If anyone plans this new route (yes please) then it could be a good idea to see if some kind of co-operation is in order (I'm thinking of exact co-ordinates, height above sea-level etc).

Please PM if interested.

Thanks

Should this be cross referenced to the RailWorks forum? Looks a bit strange here with the previous posts?

Hi, yes, you are probably correct.

The main gist of my message was to offer help to anyone planning to model the Camerton route either physically (i.e. to model it, say in 'OO") or to do it 'virtually'.

Whilst on the subject, I'm trying to scratch build Monkton Combe Station (aka Titfield). I'm painting the external battens choc brown and the 'pebbledash' GWR dark stone. Does anyone know the colours of the doors and window frames? I've emailed the expert - Simon Castens- on this one too.. I'm aiming for the latter period of its life.

Many thanks,

Richard
