What to do once you have your DEMs?

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

What to do once you have your DEMs?

Post by meagain »

Having made the plans for a route, and being on the verge of getting actaul DEM data for it, what do I do with it once I get it? Seems to be the one thing I can't find in searching for "DEM".
Pan-South-Wales Route, anyone?

Most importantly, what format is required for import into whatever for the tiles? Not having an MSTS install to hand isn't really helping ATM (at least until I get my PC fixed up ...)

MicroDem: At first glance, this seems to do human-viewable output as well as flat bitmaps, which is nice.

3DEM: HAs lots of lovely different export formats.

DEMEX: This site appears to be dead or hijacked.

Thanks for the heads-up though. :)

Dem_Ex Site is alive and well!

Post by Fishcarver »

http://www.dem-ex.com/

although some of the US Sites have been a little wonky the last couple of days because of the BIG Blackout.

You are probably going to want a terraforming application such as TSTools or TSTerraform to use with your dems to build your route. The data format that you will need depends on the application, but UTM ASCII.xyz is usually the standard.

Hope this helps! These forums did for me!

http://www.dem-ex.com/ it seems is not hijacked, but the tenure on the domain ran out on Monday and the domain registrars have locked it from re-registration.

Hmm...
Unless something has changed, TSTools is commercial software, and TSTF didn't work particularly well (oodles of File Not Found errors), though that was an old-ish version of TSTF and things may have changed lately.

Have TSTF 5.01: Will let you know how I get on.

Post by Fishcarver »

I have BOTH TSToolsVer 2 Pro and TSTF (just got the new version of TSTF last week). Both have a number of features to commend them. I have started 2 x small (60-tile) routes--one with each application, covering the same area; to see which yields the best results. The terrain is in the NW part of my home province of MB,Canada roughly in the area 53.500 N, -101.00W.

So far, I have got my DEM data (GLOBE and DTED(0)--not very good) and have converted it, using MicroDem, into formats that each app can read (UTM ASCII.xyz fot TSTF, Lat/Long ASCII .xyz for TSTools) and have registered my maps in each app.

The phun is about to begin. I'll keep you posted.

The Level 0 DEM for the UK is virtually useless, unless you're doing a flattish area. I can fully recommend TS Tools as the best means of creating terrain which is around 90% accurate, if you take your time with the tracing. Some hand finishing is required but not half as bad as the "old" way of doing it by plotting spot heights and moving and pivoting 1500r sections of road!

Soon, I might finally be on the verge of getting hold of some 25m stuff. Hurrah!
