Distant Mountains
Has anybody used Distant Mountains in a route or know of a route that uses them?
Is there any provision in RE to define them?
I note in the Sim Options screen they can be set on or off, but this feature seems little documented.

The Marias Pass and a few of the U.S. downloads have distant mountains. Although there is an option in RE to define them, you have to use the 3rd party program (Demex ?) to import DEM data in a suitable mode for them to be used.
As most people can not afford DEM data if they live outside the U.S., routes using this option have not appeared in Europe.
Do a search for DEM or Distant Mountains on train-sim.com and you should find out what you need to know, there was a lot of discussion there a while ago.

Thanks Saddletank & Mike for your replies. I've looked at the Demex site and there is mention of it - it seems it can create them from exisitng tiles.
I could certainly do with something like that or else famous views such as Robin Hood's Bay from Ravenscar (+ reverse) cannot be seen. I wonder if they would help.
I could also do with distant objects - visibility may be 2000m bad in San Francisco but it isn't like that round here!
I'll have a trawl through the TS.com forums as suggested.

I think there is a registry edit or something on the MSTS official website whic allows you to increase the view distance - owever I think thqt only affects the users PC rather than a route

Come on John, who are you kidding, remember, I lived in Scarborough, on a good day you could not see the sea from the promenade for the sea fog

MSTS is good at coping with sea fogs given suitable environment settings. Mike - things have changed since you at Scarboro. Remember The Who song, I Can See For Miles and Miles?
That's how it's like now!
I wasn't aware of registry tweaks, I'll have a poke around to see if I can spot it. But really would prefer a solution that works generally.

Unfortunately, John, MSTS has a problem with displaying distant mountain terrain and seawater: especially if you're modelling a bay: when the normal terrain view distance ends, at 2km, the distant mountain terrain is then visible again, giving the illusion of a sea 2km wide!
If you've just got a straight seafront, you can choose not to generate the distant mountain terrain for those tiles out to sea, but if you've got a bay, it isn't possible without some very wierd effects when you're looking across it.
And yes, JohnCS's Demex is the way to go: an invaluable tool, makes extracting distant mountain terrain easy, whether from DEM data, or from the existing terrain.
