3irty-5ive New Route

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

3irty-5ive New Route

Post by tupac »

Hi,
I was planning on trying to release a steam-era goods traffic route I've been working on off and on since October of last year. I thought I should get it out the door before MSTS2 arrives. Anyways, It's a small single tile layout that uses some default MSTS buildings and some custom buildings downloaded from here. I haven't written for permission to release them yet as I'm not sure how I would acually release them. do I:
a) Let people download and install the models manually one by one and add them to my route
b) Try and include the custom files in the route installer.
I think A) sounds more flexible if you've already downloaded the stuff for another route lets say, but B) sounds easier for the installer.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
James.

James, if I were you I'd go for your 2nd option: if your route has the objects concerned placed, then it won't work without those objects and things will all go a bit pear-shaped for the end-user until they have installed each of the objects.

The only problem with B is that, as you rightly imply, you'll need the permission of the model builder for each model, which obviously means writing a good few e-mails but of course you shouldn't go ahead without permission.

I'm in much the same permission with my route (well, I'm a lot further away from being finished than you!), and will need to do the same thing as I've downloaded quite a bit from here and elsewhere.

One other possibility: if you can't get permission for objects, you could always, of course, produce a different version of your route for release, replacing the non-default objects with default ones - you could even do that with the entire route and avoid the problem altogether, but, of course, the route would be a lot less interesting like that!

Cheers
mick

The voice of the people has spoken....
Just as an update, I have taken your advice and will try option 'B' It was actually a very pleasant experience writing to the 3D model authors and recieving their permission...now if I could just figure out what those 'for route builder only' buttons do in route ritter..ha

Further developments...
I posted some screenshots over at train-sim.com. I will try to upload the route to the file library tonight (should be about 13.5 megs)

Looks like an interesting little route. The name is intriguing, did you base it on a layout plan number or something?

It's more by luck than design that the name is intriguing. When I began using Route Editor and geographt extrator last October, I had many false starts-each were numbered and I ended up at '35' Not actualy 35 tries but close:). Anyways the name stuck so I'm glad you like it:)

Does this route require Finescale?

No It just requires MSTS default routes to be installed.

Also over at Train-sim.com under the 'Route Specification' forum index are the specs for the route; the route is available for download there too.

Thanks people,
I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying it and there haven't been any problems getting the route installed and up and running.

Downloaded it the other day. Great little route. Only tried it with 4472 which I don't like much and can't wait to run it with "3D's" Fowler Tank and wagons (sorry can't remember who the authors were but they did a really great job on these items). I particularly like the really steep cuttings and the scenery makes it! Well done - something for me to aspire to! Thanks for releasing it to us.
