Markers(?) in default routes

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Markers(?) in default routes

Post by jcjmann »

Can anyone tell me what those huge objects are in the default routes that can be seen in RE. Some have arrows on top. I suspect they're long distance markers for track laying, but I can't select them in RE, so I don't know how they got there, or even what they're called.

They are indeed markers and the information for them is stored in the route MKR file. The tall ones with the St Andrews cross on are type 2 markers and are invaluable for route building.

You are correct, they are marker's.

They are there because in the Europe1 Folder in route's, there is a file with the Extension .mkr, this file lists location's in lat/lon and a description.

The file is in unicode.

Type 1 and 2 are blue flags and Big red blotches but what other types are there?

There's a type 0 too which is another acre of coloured carpet. I only ever use the St Andrews flags, the others hide the detail.

Tis a pain that isn't it - but I used the three types to distinguish between stations, junctions and simple route guidance. The image files for these can be changed if you so wish - they're in the Global\Textures folder.

I used type 2 to show the path of my line and type 0 for Gradient's.

When I get to a gradient change, I just de-activate the marker's. ALT + V then press M. or select View => Display Markers from menu.

I just note the location of the marker Mentally and just switch back on after I pass the Gradient change.

Here is a sample from the MRC marker File, (Midland Railway Centre).

Marker ( -1.3559369614333456 53.05658840541782 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3533992379823743 53.05634131236193 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.352218172794202 53.05603244677349 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3509257848423102 53.055105854884495 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3579328611015504 53.055847127810544 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3589740811996942 53.05547649076238 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3598445656252947 53.05473522017689 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3609735322445067 53.05417927030966 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3619602128855106 53.053314464638476 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3628887697217629 53.052511436505505 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3639038763354183 53.05170841386552 Line 2 )
Marker ( -1.3652071064105733 53.05096716707312 Line 2 )

Right, Marker ( State's It's a marker! Must have a space either side of the ( ) 's.

the -1.xxxxxxx is the Londitude and the 53.xxxxxx is the Latitude, I think.

The text "LINE" is a discription. You must not use /() in these names don't use spaces, just enter a _ which is SHIFT + - ( Next to the 0)

The 2 on the end is the marker type. Then the end ) .

There's a line of Unicode first, similar to the Ref file, too. E.g.

SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0I0t______
Marker ( -0.45047538453789443 54.35789881556499 Hayburn_Wyke_Stn 1 )
Marker ( -0.46297484863161936 54.36800031789219 Stainton_Dale_Stn 1 )
Marker ( -0.4832632181902753 54.39745027999576 Ravenscar_Stn 1 )

Also, marker types can be 0 1 or 2.

Could the line of unicode in this, and the ref file be the problem with RE. I do believe I see the word JINX !

Yes, perhaps it's Jinxed!!

Alan and John, and all others, thanks for the help with this. If I'd known this before I could have saved a lot of time. There I was planting a tree as a marker then trying to find it from 2 miles away!

It is possible to maintain several marker files...

In TSTF using a map or such as the background, I manage a file for Roads, one for rail, one for gradients, one for rivers and a couple for odds and sods...

I load the one I want or plot a new one , then export to MSTS from TSTF....
