Just a quickie! Doc Martin has built a Royal Navy Bus which were used during the early sixties. Most Shore Establishments had at least one and several were kept garaged at all Naval Dockyards.

Here are a few screen shot's of Doc's bus at Rosyth Dockyard, which have been built for the SCP. Thank you Martin for a superb looking vehicle.

Looks like you have a "floating" building in the first pic there, Geoff.

Or is it a concrete apron in front of the building?

Hi,
Niall was right, it was a floater. Go back and have a look, I have corrected it.

Nice work - you might have asked for a "Tilly" too, Geoff.

Nice to see my RN Coach in place. I fear, however, that the model is a bit too modern for the period of the route. The one photo I found which was any use as a basis for the model (three-quarters front on as ever with vehicle pics - grr), was of the bus probably after it had been sold off by the navy and carrying a civilian number plate with a R suffix. If I have it right, R means 1983. Let's say the bus had been in service with the navy for 20 years before it was decommissioned. This means it was new in about 1963. Maybe it can just squeak in to the route but I would have preferred to have made a more 50s looking model. However, info and useable pictures of Strachan-bodied Bedford SB5 coaches is pretty scarce. Or am I being too picky?

And what's a "Tilly", please? :D

Hi Martin,

For 'tilly' read Utillity and could be used to describe any General Purpose vehicle.

Good luck

The Navy used "Tillies" as runarounds ( Bedford Vans I think, back in the late 50's). They were painted in exactly the same livery as your buses Martin, which is what made me think of them. They were everywhere in the Naval Dockyards at the time .

Martin has already done a Tilly (Bedford RN Van) There are about six of them placed around the Dockyard.

Maybe when I've finished reskinning my ex-Metropolitan LT Dreadnought coaches into LT chocolate brown livery from photos of the originals kindly provided by Roger North, built an AEC Monarch Bus Recovery truck and also finally modelled and sceneried Brill and Ludgershall station :D

I realise I overestimated the date of the R registration since, counting from A as 1963, I forgot to omit the letters that weren't used because they look like numbers. This might push the introduction of the coach into naval service back to about 1959 or so.

Also don't forget the E reg was only used for 6 months,so I reckon your RN bus will fit into the era of the route ok as it's from the 50's to Mid 60's,also as a side even though steam officialy finished around 1967 or 68 some steam lingered on in Scotland on coal trains for some months after.

We have set the route from the mid fifties to 1967/8 so that we can use the early green diesels as well, for those who prefer to run diesel instead of steam. The RN Coach that Martin has done fits in well with the time period, as the Navy were still using these until about 1970.
