just having first stab at RE before trying it on doing a route proper. how do you experts judge where to put mileposts, as I can't see anyway of measuring distance.

I use TS tools for mine, the trackbed tool in there allows you to draw a line along the track and measure off 1 statute mile, then all you do is place markers over the spots and as an aid you type in the milepost number on the marker, go into RE and you have marker flags at 1 mile along your track, all you need to do then is place the mileposts and number accordingly.

File ID 279. You may also find file ID 1409 useful.

Other way of doing it is by placing a platform marker (very short) at your 'zero' miles point, and then loading up the sim with a test activity involving driving to that 'platform' from wherever you're wanting your mileposts to end. If you've got F10 switched on, you've got a reading to the nearest 0.01 miles of how far away from your 'station' you are, i.e. how far from zero miles. Before you start driving, also press 0 (zero) which will give your latitude and longitude.

Then take screenshots wherever you want to put a milepost (or else just write down the lat. and long. numbers) so that you know where to place the mileposts in Route Editor.

I would like to pretend this was my idea. It wasn't: it was Michael Vone's, taken from his superb guide to route building, which is the best single investment you can make before starting to build a route! (Michael actually suggests placing a signal rather than a platform marker, but I favour the latter because (a) you get an extra decimal place on the Next Station indicator compared to signals on the Track Monitor and (b) placing signals too early can, I think, cause nasty things to happen in MSTS...).

Hope this helps, anyway.

PS this will work for kilometres, too, of course, if that's how your route and loco are configured.

I think a Msts error compressed it and it would fit in his pocket by the time it had finished.

Just a thought about placing mileposts, if you're doing a real route, pop along to your local library and look at the OS 25 inch maps for the route. These show the position of the actual mileposts (and ¼, ½, and ¾ posts) as well as signal gantries.
