Old Oak Graveyard.......

Post by basildd »

Went to North Pole Depot today to do some staff training involving shunting with scharfenberg couplers. As it finished early, took a trip around the canal to Old Oak common Depot and arranged to take one of the group in to see the place. It is a sad reflection of todays motive power requirements.......

What would Mr Brunel make of it all.

BTW, if he was so great why was he not Sir IKB?...Point to ponder when voting for the all time great :)

Its years, about 18 or so, since I last visited OOC. No Westerns then :-?

Interesting that a Hymek is there. Which is it, and can we have it for MSTS?

Good pictures.

Its a lot different to the last time I was there too! Serviceable loco's were 59202 and 203, 37248 (I think it must be servicable as it was moving!), an 08 shunter, 37604 from North Pole, 47760 and er, that was it! 67023 had come off shed earlier in the day. The rest of the stuff there included;

5029 Nunney Castle, D1015, D7029 (was the Hymek you asked about), 50031, D444 (locked in a shed unfortunately - got a pic but its quite dark), 50049, 08414 and 37175 all preserved or from the heritage fleet, plus lots of members of classes 08, 09, 31, 33, 37, 47, 58 and 73..... All withdrawn from service. It was really demoralising considering the amount of stuff that used to be there when I have visited the place. Oh, and if anyone is thinking of going there, there is a huge iron gate and security post half way down the drive towards the depot, so visitors are definitely not welcome!

I have to agree - I remember the 1971 (I think) Open day when D7036 had just been withdrawn and you could buy anything you wanted off of it for 10p - thats right - TEN PENCE - per item, the only proviso being you had to remove it yourself! That included the cast numbers from the cabs. A mate of mine had the drivers chair out of it!!! Its just sad to think that if you removed the scrapped and 'heritage' loco's from the depot, you couldn't fill half the turntable anymore.... :(

7029 was a restoration project on the severn valley railway and never moved an inch since it was stored during the 1980's. The DTG eventually got to move it from the valley to old oak and now are restoring it hopefully to mainline order in the next 5 - 8 years time. I really wish i was old enough to see warships westerns and hoovers on the turntable.

7029. So thats where she went.

I remember that loco and the DTG's 'Warship' D821 at the NYMR.

Also remember the engine was good at blowing smoke rings when trying to cold start it.

A Hymek on the main line. :P Better check the piggy bank then 8)

Thats probably because the siding is full of stored 37s, 47s and 58s

It is a sad site, The most famous depot in the world and ews have given it an infamous reputation of if a mainline loco goes in it isnt going to come out. Its only to people like DRS and Fragonset that we dont see this hideous sheds dominating

Actually, there was only an 08 next to the Western and the 50 was on its own road and the green 47 and 08421 were next to it, outside the 'Factory' which contained 50031 and 7029. D444 was in the little shed all on its own and then further over in the yard were 58047 / 08825 and next to the running shed in a line were 37701/719/513 and 33116 which is supposed to be going to the NRM. All the other withdrawn 58's were gathered around the turntable with a couple 08s and Nunney Castle. At the back of the yard next to the Adalante shed were a couple of dozen scrapped loco's oncluding a number of 73's, a few 47's including yellow peril 47803, and a lot of 31's including Reggie Rail, Inter City and EWS livery versions amongst the Dutch ensemble.

Here's D444 which was in almost total blackness, to the point where you couldn't actually see it without the flash! :)
