Manchester Metrolink - All Change at Altrincham

Post by davemarvin »

Though I usually stick to steam, I've been so impressed by Terry Cunliffe's Metrolink route that I had to follow in DarthMunch's footsteps and produce some screenshots.

Metrolink started operating in 1992, using Ansaldo trams built in Italy. Its southern terminus is at Altrincham, from where it uses former BR tracks and stations to reach the edge of the city centre. For the short stretch from Altrincham to Deansgate Junction, it runs alongside the Chester-Stockport rail line, and this provides some varied traffic. Our tram journey is on board a 2 x 2-car set through to Bury, with No.1012 'Catherine Hallett' leading No.1002 'The Mary Sumner'.

Part 1 - Altrincham to Navigation Road (in/north-bound)

Bus, tram and rail connections at Altrincham

No.142015 leaves on a Northwich-Manchester service, as our tram to Bury waits to depart

No.158757 stops on a North Wales-Chester-Stockport-Manchester train

One Autumn afternoon, No.47376 'Freightliner 1995' rolls through with containers, perhaps on a circuitous route to Trafford Park

The Altrincham Metrolink platforms are on the right

No.158757 accelerates away from Altrincham

No.47376 approaches Navigation Road

Both systems reduce to single track through Navigation Road station until they reach Deansgate Junction and Timperley.

At Navigation Road, our tram briefly catches up with the Northwich-Manchester

No.158757 passes Navigation Road

No.47376 creates some interest for waiting Metrolink passengers at Navigation Road

To be continued, Dave.

Thanks Chris, just a few more. The temptation on this route is to take a shot every few yards, or at least of every stop!

Part 2 - Deansgate Junction and Navigation Road

North of Navigation Road, the Metrolink and the Stockport lines part company at Deansgate Junction. The latter curves east to Skelton Junction, once a location of great importance in having a freight yard and the divergence of 2 routes to Liverpool.

No.47376 passes Deansgate Junction box and crossing

No.47376 takes the spur to Skelton Junction, whilst the Metrolink line continues north to Timperley

An unusual visit by No.50015 'Valiant' coming off the spur with a train of empty tankers bound for Stanlow near Ellesmere Port

No.50015 heads south past Deansgate Junction

Also heading south is No.142048, apparently on a Manchester to Birkenhead service, if you believe it ?

No.142048 runs through Navigation Road towards Altrincham

No.50015 rumbles over Navigation Road crossing

To be concluded back to Altrincham, Dave

Part 3 - Return to Altrincham

Finally, we have a look at these southbound workings through Altrincham...

No.50015 'Valiant' between Navigation Road and Altrincham

No.142048 approaches Altrincham

In and out-bound trams cross just north of Altrincham station, whilst No.60100 'Pride of Acton' passes with domestic waste binliners

No.50015 pulls through Altrincham

And on into Cheshire

No.60100 passes with binliners from Northenden to Appley Bridge, routed via Northwich, Warrington and Wigan

No.142048 draws to a stop

The next tram is awaited at the Metrolink platform

No.142048 is about to depart

Missed it! Next stop Hale.

With thanks to Terry Cunliffe for this route and to all providers of the stock.

Thank you Ali and to trainmad123 (sorry I don't know your real name, welcome to the Forum). I used the CD from uktrainsim to get this wonderful route, and it has a lovely bonus in the form of Crich Tram Museum. Mind you, it's not much help if you don't have MSTS installed.

Just picked up on this.

Are you using the dreaded Vista?

If so, have a read here:-

http://forums.uktrainsim.com/viewforum.php?f=273

If MSTS is on another machine down load and transfer on a USB memory/data stick.

Questions in the Beginers or General Forums should bring answers.

Dave, Great shots by the way. :D

Hi Lee,

You will be busy on the railway in this sunshine then. 8)

Was the link to the Vista forum any help?

Dave,
Thanks for your screenies.......... You've captured the 'feel' of the route better than I could ever imagine (and what ever I could hope to cobble up with the 'print screen' key myself  )

I look forward to seeing some more...........

Thank you Terry and Andy. Terry, I daren't tell you how many shots I've taken of your wonderful route - there are so many great views. As I'm quite hopeless with the technical aspects of MSTS, it's the pictures which I concentrate on. I will post some more soon.
