Lydbrook Branch - Long Lost Passenger

Post by davemarvin »

Part 1

The Lydbrook Branch, originally part of the Severn & Wye Railway, saw its passenger trains withdrawn as early as 1929. One of these was a curious service which operated between Berkeley Road and Lydbrook Junction via Severn Bridge, Lydney and Cinderford. From Cinderford it retraced its route back to Serridge Junction to gain the Lydbrook Branch for the final leg.

Services also ran in the opposite direction, and on a wintry February morning we join the 8.45am from Lydbrook Junction to Lydney with GWR Class 517 0-4-2T No.527 in charge of 2 clerestory coaches...

Waiting for clearance at Lower Lydbrook (In fact this station closed in 1903!)

4 minutes late for 8.51am stop at Upper Lydbrook

Further delayed by the crossing

Getting away past the churchyard.

To be continued...

Nice bit of nostalgia with those shots. The winter captures the scenes to their best advantage and the period stock is a perfect match for this idylic route.

Thanks Geoff.

Part 3

In these final shots, the 8.45am Lydbrook Junction to Lydney has arrived at Cinderford where it is allowed 4 minutes (!) for running round. It then retraces its route back through Drybrook Road to Serridge Junction where this time it stays on the Severn & Wye Line...

A swift bit of uncoupling...

...and running round

Setting back the train

Cinderford yard

Plenty of business

Ready to depart

Getting away

Recorded by the box

Return to Drybrook Road due at 9.11am

Passing Crown Siding just beyond Serridge Junction.

And so we leave our train as it continues to Speech House Road, Parkend, Whitecroft, Lydney Town and Lydney Junction, due to arrive at 9.44am.

With thanks to Reg Furniss for the route and to all providers of the stock.
